Job summary

A public health organization in London is seeking a Specialty Doctor in Forensic Psychiatry to join a multidisciplinary team in providing psychiatric care. Job description

The post is based in His Majesty's Prison Wormwood Scrubs where the specialty doctor will join an established multidisciplinary team in providing psychiatric care to patients. This post is especially desirable for those wishing to pursue a career in Forensic Psychiatry or General Psychiatry, including Addictions Psychiatry. The successful candidate will be joining an expanded Mental Health In-Reach Team (MHIT) in a Cat B remand prison (with an inmate population of around 1200) in a vibrant part of West London. The Mental Health In-reach is multidisciplinary, with a Team Manager, 2 FTE Consultants (3 Consultants), 8 CPNs, social worker, occupational therapies team, speech and language therapist, psychologists, and social worker. The MHIT works closes with primary care, prison counselling services, ForwardTrust (addictions service), and prison healthcare inpatient unit.

Main duties of the job

They will manage major mental illness and organize transfers to hospitals. They will be involved in the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD. Experience in the assessment and management of a wide range of clinical presentations including psychosis, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, personality disorders, ADHD, psychotic, neurodevelopmental and substance related disorders. There is a combination of inpatient (health care unit) and outpatient (prison ordinary location) work. They will expect to see around 6 new patients each week and 10 follow ups. The specialty doctor will have access to a shared office with other doctors and their own computer. We have very friendly and skilled consultants and MDT, and we support clinical and professional interests.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Full Registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a current licence to practise from the GMC at intended start date
  • Section 12 approved or eligibility
Clinical Experience
  • Competence in the management of a broad range of general adult mental disorders.
  • Experience with inpatient psychiatric management and with working in a multidisciplinary Team.
  • A doctor appointed to this grade shall have full registration with the General Medical Council and shall have at least 4 years of full time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time basis) of which at least 2 years will be in a psychiatry.
  • Excellent communication skills both verbally and written
  • Familiarity with a wide range of theoretical and clinical approaches.
  • Ability to provide medical leadership to the multi-disciplinary team and to function as an active member of the multi-disciplinary team
  • Experience in Forensic and/ or General Adult Psychiatry.
  • Clear thoughts on how to involve service users in service development and to provide a service which is experienced as being "service-user friendly"
  • Practical experience in a short term psychological therapy
Knowledge
  • Good knowledge of the biological, psychological and social determinants of adult mental disorders and evidence based management interventions.
  • Up to date knowledge of recent DH documentation and NICE Guidelines
  • Evidence of change management skills
