Job summary

Central Saint Martins in London is seeking a Specialist Technician in Letterpress to manage the Letterpress workshop day-to-day, support students and staff across disciplines, and help realise ambitious creative outcomes. You will maintain equipment, lead inductions, demonstrations, and ensure safety and efficient operations while collaborating with academics and industry professionals.

We are seeking a highly skilled Specialist Technician in Letterpress to join our Print Technical Resources team and support one of the College's unique and valued specialist workshop environments.This is an exciting opportunity to work at the intersection of traditional craft, contemporary practice and creative experimentation. You will take responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the Letterpress workshop, supporting students, staff and projects across a wide range of disciplines. Through technical instruction, workshop inductions, demonstrations and one-to-one guidance, you will help students develop their technical confidence and realise ambitious creative outcomes.As a specialist practitioner, you will share your expertise in letterpress printing, print finishing and publication production, supporting learning, teaching, research and exhibition activities. You will play a key role in maintaining and developing the workshop's specialist equipment, type collections and resources, ensuring they remain safe, accessible and relevant to contemporary creative practice.The role offers the opportunity to collaborate with academics, technicians, artists, designers and industry professionals within one of the world's leading creative institutions. You will also contribute to the ongoing development of workshop practices, helping to explore sustainable approaches to print production and resource management while supporting excellent student experiences.If you are passionate about letterpress, enjoy sharing specialist knowledge and want to help nurture the next generation of creative practitioners, we would love to hear from you.Your profileYou will bring substantial practical experience and specialist knowledge of letterpress printing and graphic communication gained through professional practice, technical support or creative production environments.You will have a strong understanding of letterpress processes and be confident supporting users through all stages of production, including type setting, proofing, locking up, printing, finishing and the organisation and distribution of type.You will also bring:Demonstrable practical experience of letterpress printing processes, materials, equipment and workshop practices.Experience operating, maintaining and troubleshooting specialist printing equipment and associated tools.The ability to support students, staff and external users in the safe and effective use of specialist workshop facilities.Strong digital skills, including the use of systems for communication, workshop administration, record-keeping and bookings.Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts and processes clearly to a diverse range of users.Experience implementing health and safety procedures, risk assessments and safe systems of work within workshop environments.Strong organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise workloads, manage resources and contribute to the smooth running of a busy technical service.A commitment to delivering excellent customer service and building positive working relationships with students, colleagues and external stakeholders.A proactive and solution-focused approach to solving technical challenges and improving workshop services.We are particularly interested in candidates who have experience supporting teaching and learning within a higher education, further education or creative workshop environment.
