Job description

Newcastle City Council SEND Outreach Service is looking to appoint a 0.8 FTE specialist teacher. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is committed to promoting a child centred and inclusive approach to achieve the best outcomes for children and young people with special education needs including communication and interaction needs (autism).

The SEND Outreach Service team currently includes specialist teachers, specialist Nursery Nurses and specialist Learning Support Assistants who work on a peripatetic basis to provide a range of advice, support and training for schools and settings across mainstream schools in Newcastle. Currently, the team working into schools and post 16 settings is made up of four specialist teachers and four SEN Support Workers.

Newcastle is a partnership organisation with the Autism Education Trust and we deliver AET training across mainstream schools and settings as well as other partner organisations.

The job will require working in an agile manner; most of the day to be spent in schools supporting pupils as well as time for planning and preparation on a working from home basis or from the Civic Centre and satellite offices across the city.

Successful applicants will benefit from a full programme of induction and training opportunities provided by the SEND OS team and, more widely, from the Local Authority.

Main Duties:

  1. Respond in a pro-active and collaborative way to requests made by schools and post 16 settings for advice and support for children and young people with social communication needs.
  2. Support schools to develop practice and systems designed to support children and young people with social communication needs.
  3. Work with schools to set targets and plan provision for children and young people with social communication needs.
  4. Provide training to colleagues in mainstream schools and settings in relation to provision for social communication needs.
  5. Assist with the supervision and direction of SEND Support Workers.

We are committed to protecting and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults and expect all staff to share this commitment. This post is working in regulated activity. If you are successful we will undertake additional recruitment checks which will include a check to see if you have had any criminal convictions, a check of police information and we will check the barred list(s). It is a criminal offence for a barred individual to apply for a job in regulated activity.
