Are you a qualified SENDCo with considerable experience in supporting children and young people (CYP) with SEND?

We have an exciting opportunity to work for both the Specialist Teacher Advisers and Medstead Primary School Resource Provision. This innovative role will offer the opportunity to work in supportive, and outcome-focused multidisciplinary environments with excellent supervision and CPD opportunities.

The Role:

You would join our team of Specialist Teacher Advisers within the Sensory team, which is a multi-disciplinary team consisting of Qualified Teachers of the Deaf and Vision Impaired as well as specialists including Deaf Instructors, Early Years Deaf Instructors and Qualified Habilitation Specialists.

The Sensory Team (Hearing Loss and Vision Impairment) work with children, their families, early year’s settings, schools (mainstream and special) and colleges. The team provides advice and support to children and young people (CYP) with hearing or vision loss aged 0-25 to promote their access, communication development, inclusion, empowerment, progress and raising of educational achievement.

The Teacher of the Deaf Role will uniquely be combined with Managing the Resource Provision at Medstead Primary School, Alton. Medstead is a single form, village primary school with an ethos of inclusion. It focuses on the relational approach and building of enriching learning journeys for all children in the school.

The role will involve travelling across Hampshire County, visiting schools and colleges mainly in the East Hants area of the County but with the need for flexibility to support team caseloads.

What you’ll do:

The role of the Specialist Teacher Advisor is varied, as such you can expect to provide a variety of direct and indirect support for CYP with a wide range of hearing loss. You will:

  • Hold and manage your own caseload of CYP with and without EHCPs.
  • Provide technical advice and training regarding the use of specialist equipment and modifications to the physical environment that may be necessary.
  • Plan interventions to be delivered by yourself or school/college staff.
  • Provide information and advice to families, staff and other professionals to support them to develop inclusion and work towards Preparation for Adulthood Outcomes.
  • Develop and deliver training for education personnel and parents/carers.
  • Attend and contribute professional advice at Annual Reviews.
  • Manage conflicting views and needs and negotiate a shared understanding to enable effective planning and review.
  • Advise on provision and its implementation within Education, Health and Care Plans, working closely with Special Educational Needs (SEN) colleagues.
  • Attend SEN and Disability Tribunals as required (should this be needed; additional training and support would be provided).
  • Lead and manage projects relating to your performance management or the Service Development Plan.
  • Actively support professional development, including the provision of coaching or mentoring of others in the team.
What we’re looking for:

We are looking for a qualified teacher with SENDCo accreditation and mainstream experience, who has a strong background in supporting children and young people (CYP) with hearing loss, including British Sign Language Level 1 (or willingness to study).

The ideal candidate will have excellent inclusive teaching and assessment skills, a detailed understanding of SEND legislation and the Code of Practice, and the ability to provide expert advice to staff, parents, and professionals. They should also have experience delivering training, a commitment to ongoing professional development, and up-to-date knowledge of safeguarding and best practices in SEN education.

At Medstead, you’ll join a warm, inclusive, and forward-thinking team passionate about supporting deaf learners. As a Teacher of the Deaf, you’ll work alongside experienced colleagues and skilled Communication Support Workers to assess, plan, and deliver high-quality teaching within our established resource provision.

You’ll collaborate closely with the SENDCo and Headteacher, contributing to the strategic development of SEND across the school. We value professional growth and wellbeing, offering regular training, peer support, and opportunities for development.

This role is part of Hampshire’s Specialist Teacher Advisory Service (STAS), which includes expert teams supporting a wide range of needs.
