Job description

Go back University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Trust

Specialist Speech & Language Therapist - ICST

The closing date is 14 May 2025

We have an exciting and rewarding opportunity for a Band 6 Adult Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) to join our well-established, committed and friendly stroke team at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust (UHMBT).

You will have existing knowledge and/or skills in working with adults with acquired swallowing and communication differences (and ideally across a stroke pathway), with existing training in dysphagia to at least Level C.

As a team we provide clinical input to patients across the entire stroke pathway from acute to community settings. We work closely with our MDT colleagues as part of an Integrated Community Stroke Service which ensures a responsive, needs-based approach to holistic patient-centred care. You will join us at an exciting time as we are currently reviewing our models of service delivery. We also run our own Videofluoroscopy clinic.

Main duties of the job

The stroke team is part of the Adult Speech and Language Therapy service at UHMBT, which also has pathways in non-stroke, head and neck and voice. This offers opportunities to be part of our 'grow your own' ethos, with regular supervision, peer support, continual professional development and wider multidisciplinary links. The service is supported by an overarching Clinical and Professional Lead and is embedded within both the Lancashire and South Cumbria Integrated Care System and Integrated Stroke and Neuro Delivery Board which enables our involvement in a range of national and regional workforce initiatives.

The post will be initially based at Furness General Hospital, but you may be required to work across Morecambe Bay as needed. In the future, you will be expected to work as part of a six day service.

If you are a motivated, flexible and forward-thinking Band 5 SLT who is ready to advance their professional and clinical development in a more senior role, or a current Band 6 SLT wanting to further consolidate their knowledge and skills alongside a nurturing team, we would love to hear from you.

About us

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.
