Job description

Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) is the biggest employer in Nottingham with over 19,000 staff.

We have an exciting opportunity for a band 6 Specialist Speech and Language Therapist to join the Stroke SLT inpatient team at Nottingham University Hospitals. The post will allow the post holder to develop and consolidate knowledge and skills working with this client group. There will be the opportunity to develop leadership skills, to become involved in projects and innovations on the Stroke unit. There will also be opportunities to develop advanced skills in communication and dysphagia management skills, including videofluoroscopy and FEES.

We are a friendly and supportive team with a high level of clinical expertise. You will be well supported by band 7 SLTs and Clinical Specialist SLT. There is excellent interdisciplinary working with the therapies team and strong links with the wider MDT and community SLT services. There will be opportunities to also get involved in projects, task and finish groups within the SLT service, and delivering training.

This is a permanent full-time post in this team and is not part of the rotation programme.

Main duties of the job

To independently manage, triage and prioritise own caseload providing specialist SLT assessment, formulation, diagnosis, intervention and advice based on evidence-based practice for people with communication and/or swallowing difficulties, their families, carers, support staff and professionals.

There will be opportunities to develop and deliver training and supervise and support band 5 and assistant Speech & Language Therapists.

Working for our organisation

Nottingham University Hospital Trust is a large teaching hospital, across 2 sites: Queens Medical Centre and City Hospital.

The Speech & Language Therapist Service works across both sites, working alongside a separate ENT service. We work across a very broad range of acute specialties including Healthcare of the Older Person, Respiratory, and Critical Care.

NUH hosts a number of regional services including Neurosciences unit, Major Trauma Centre, a comprehensive Stroke unit, Trent Cardiac Centre, Burns Unit and Upper GI services. We also have SLTs within the Neuro-rehabilitation unit, the MDT neuro-rehabilitation outpatient services, and an SLT service for Neurology outpatients.

Role Purpose:

To provide a high quality Speech and Language Therapy service at Nottingham University Hospital Trust in a wide variety of settings.

Role Context:

The role requires clinical and professional expertise in order that those with speech, language and communication needs and/or dysphagia needs benefit from a well-coordinated pro-active, specialist, efficient and effective speech and language therapy service within the designated specialism/setting.

To represent the Speech and Language Therapy service at agreed forums as required.

Knowledge, training and experience
  • Degree in speech and language therapy.
  • HCPC registration.
  • Registered member of RCSLT.
  • Completed RCSLT NQT competencies and, if relevant, Dysphagia competencies.
Person specification
Training & Qualifications
  • Recognised Speech & Language Therapy Degree Qualification.
  • Health Professions Council – License to Practice.
  • Registered member of RCSLT.
  • Evidence of successful completion of short courses related to client group.
Experience
  • Relevant post-graduate experience in specialist area including experience with working with dysphagia & communication difficulties.
  • Well established knowledge of assessment tools for specialist group.
  • Established knowledge of a range of appropriate therapeutic interventions relevant to the client group.
  • Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Demonstrates effective ability to prioritise a large caseload.
