Job description

Specialist Speech and Language Therapist - Stroke

Available as a B6 post or a B6 development post. If you are applying as a development post it will commence on a B6 Annex U. Therefore you will be paid 70% of entry point on a B6 & when competencies achieved you will move to entry point on B6 scale

Have you completed your NQPs and are starting to look for an opportunity to develop your skills and specialise in the clinical field of acute stroke? Are you interested in managing people with acquired communication and/or swallowing difficulties following stroke in the acute setting?

Would you like to be part of a county wide acute & community SLT service? East Sussex Adult Speech & Language Therapy service is an integrated community & acute trust.

Would you like protected time for your CPD with monthly clinical forums, regular clinical supervision & support to attend relevant CENs & external training opportunities?

This band 6 stroke specialist therapist position is based on the hyperacute and subacute stroke unit at Eastbourne District General Hospital and will provide opportunities for close MDT working with colleagues on the unit and across the stroke pathway. There are opportunities for developing skills in communication and swallow rehabilitation including groups, IOPI, Ampcare & EMST - with an occasional need to work across acute sites inc. Conquest Hospital. There will be an opportunity to participate in our regional videofluoroscopy clinics, our award-winning Swallow Disorder Clinic and FEES.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for an enthusiastic therapist, who has completed their NQP competencies & possibly post basic dysphagia training, looking for their next post to specialise in community SLT services. You would have the opportunity to work alongside highly specialist SLTs & SLT assistants to gain the experience & skills to work at a specialist level.

You will work alongside specialist clinicians in community services, rehabilitation, voice, head & neck cancer, stroke, critical care & neurological degenerative conditions to further develop your knowledge & skills

We work with higher education institutes to develop innovative ways of delivering student placements & have recently invested in 360 cameras to facilitate virtual clinics

Your job plan will allow you time to focus on your development & work with colleagues on service improvements. We are proactive in research & service development & staff are encouraged to attend postgraduate courses/ RCSLT CENs. There is also a comprehensive in-service education programme within the department with monthly clinical forums & the wider therapy Services. We have close links with the local School of Healthcare Professions at the University of Brighton & other universities
