This post offers an exciting opportunity to join Shropshire Community Neuro Rehabilitation Team. We are a specialist multi-disciplinary team that supports people with acquired brain injury and progressive neurological conditions across the Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin area. The team consists of Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Clinical Psychologists, Support Workers and Administrative staff.

We are looking for a dynamic Speech and Language Therapist who has experience working with adults with neurological conditions who may have communication and/or swallowing disorders. You will join a friendly and enthusiastic team, providing specialist Speech and Language Therapy input to adults in outpatient settings and their own homes.

The post is suitable for a therapist with experience of working with people with neurological disorders (including stroke) who has not yet worked in a specialist neurological service. We provide regular supervision and will support you to develop your specialist skills.

The post is based in Shrewsbury but there may be potential to work from other SCHT bases within the county.

You will work alongside the Clinical Lead Speech and Language Therapist to provide treatment to clients in individual and group settings. You will be responsible for your own clinical caseload and for designing programmes to be delivered by support workers and caregivers as part of your clients’ rehabilitation.

As part of this role you will:

  • Provide specialist assessment and management for people with acquired brain injuries and progressive neurological conditions, working with the multi-disciplinary team and other local agencies including families, caregivers, local authority services and third sector organisations.
  • Provide specialist management for people with communication difficulties including aphasia, motor speech disorders and cognitive communication difficulties.
  • Contribute to developing new ways of working, alongside the Clinical Lead SLT.
  • Provide specialist assessment and management for people with dysphagia, including designing and delivering rehabilitation programmes.
  • Support the MDT to work effectively with people with communication difficulties including joint sessions and delivering training.
  • Work in an interdisciplinary context considering a client’s holistic needs and contributing to their overall rehabilitation.

You must have appropriate UK professional registration. This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service.

Essential criteria
  • Recognised degree in Speech and Language Therapy or equivalent qualification.
  • Current registration with HCPC.
  • Certified member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.
  • Post graduate certificate in dysphagia (or equivalent substantial experience and experiential training to demonstrate skills).
  • Evidence of post graduate training/CPD in areas of acquired neurological communication and swallowing disorders.
Experience

  • Experience of carrying out specialist assessment and intervention within area of acquired neurological communication and swallowing disorders.
  • Experience of multi-disciplinary working.
  • Experience of supervising and giving feedback to others e.g. students, qualified staff and rehabilitation assistants.
Knowledge and Skills
Essential criteria
  • Knowledge and experience of a wide range of approaches to neurological assessment and rehabilitation.
  • Ongoing awareness of recent developments in practice and research including NSFs/NICE guidelines.
  • Ability to prioritise, delegate and organise with excellent time management skills.
  • Understanding of clinical governance and risk management and their implications for the service.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Use of audit and outcome measures for service improvement.
  • Skilled in the use of IT, including Microsoft 365 and Apps/programmes used in the assessment, treatment and management of clients with communication difficulties.
