Overview

A Vacancy at Northern Lincolnshire & Goole NHS Foundation Trust.

An opportunity within Pathology - Blood Sciences at Lincoln County Hospital for a Biomedical Scientist (employed grade depending on candidates, qualifications, experience and potential). After a period of training, the successful applicant will be required to work in all sections of the laboratory: Clinical Chemistry, Haematology, Coagulation and Blood Transfusion. The current analytical equipment in the laboratory includes Roche Cobas c8000, Sysmex XN 2000, Werfen ACL TOP and Bio-Rad IH-500.

You will be required to have good communication and keyboard skills, along with the ability to work under pressure. Although working as part of a team of Biomedical Scientists, once fully trained, you should also be capable of working independently. Participation in the 24hr shift service is a requirement of the post. We are committed to personal and professional development. Training within your new post will be given if necessary. Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is encouraged. Biomedical scientists carry out a range of laboratory and scientific tests to support the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

Responsibilities
  • Work as part of the multidisciplinary Blood Sciences laboratory after appropriate training and completion of the relevant in-house competencies.
  • Use either automated instrumentation or manual techniques to perform routine and specialist investigations on samples in accordance with Path Links Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Perform routine maintenance on complex, high-value laboratory equipment and troubleshoot problems, rectifying them or seeking appropriate assistance.
  • Handle day-to-day supervision over lower-grade support staff.
  • Process pathology samples and enter patient requests and results using a LIMS.
  • Load/unload and file samples; use and maintain automated analytical platforms.
  • Provide clinical validation of patient results using laboratory middleware (B5/B6) and clinical authorization of patient results (B6 only).
  • Interpret internal and external controls and communicate results and other queries with service users by telephone or other means.
Requirements and Skills
  • Qualified Biomedical Scientist with ability to work across Clinical Chemistry, Haematology, Coagulation and Blood Transfusion after training.
  • Good communication and keyboard skills; ability to work under pressure and, when fully trained, work independently.
  • Willingness to participate in the 24-hour shift service.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and also autonomously after training; capability to perform both routine and complex pathology investigations.
