Specialist Pharmacist - Surgery and Imaging & Anaesthetics
Roles and Responsibilities
- Clinical Practice
- Be responsible and accountable for the clinical pharmacy service provided to the Surgery and I&A directorates, including wards, theatres, and outpatient clinics.
- Review prescriptions for accuracy and legality, identify potential problems, and ensure effective supply and appropriate labelling of medicines for inpatients and discharge.
- Monitor treatment outcomes, assess adverse effects, and support patient understanding and discharge planning related to medication.
- Liaise with Lead Directorate Pharmacists to develop clinical pharmacy services, including ward pharmacy and medicines management.
- Provide safe, effective, and cost-efficient drug use, making referrals and communicating pharmaceutical needs effectively.
- Apply pharmaceutical knowledge to plan, manage, and review therapeutic programs, participating in multidisciplinary rounds and contributing to the pharmacy profile.
- Offer advice on pharmaceutical issues, support clinical governance, and develop medicines management initiatives.
- Leadership
- Act as a role model for junior staff, promote evidence-based practice, and lead clinical governance initiatives.
- Develop pharmacy services aligned with national and local objectives, and contribute to research initiatives.
- Service Management
- Ensure compliance with standards, manage risks, delegate duties, and evaluate staff performance using departmental tools.
- Provide pharmaceutical and financial information, monitor prescribing practices, and report on drug usage and expenditure.
- Evaluation of Service
- Monitor pharmacy services for safety and efficiency, document workload, and perform drug usage audits based on priorities.
- Research and Service Development
- Critically appraise pharmacy practice, incorporate research evidence, facilitate clinical trials, and develop clinical pathways.
- Seek improvements in ward and clinical services, and support continuous professional development.
- Education and Training
- Supervise junior pharmacists and trainees, identify training needs, and participate in educational programs.
- Maintain a CPD portfolio, contribute to departmental training, and support clinical teaching.
- Other Duties
- Maintain broad pharmacy practice knowledge, communicate effectively, and adhere to legislation and ethical standards.
- Participate in ongoing education, training, and adapt to service needs as discussed with management.
