CNWL NHS Trust is seeking a skilled and compassionate Band 6 Occupational Therapist to join our Children’s Community Service based in Milton Keynes. We are a friendly, dynamic and innovative team who are passionate about supporting children, young people and families in Milton Keynes. We have an established internal training programme including Trust wide OT peer support and opportunities for external training.

Our admin base is at the Open University site. We see the children referred to our service either within the Child Development Centre (within the grounds of Milton Keynes General Hospital) or in their homes.

Main duties of the job

We are an integrated Health and Social Care Occupational Therapy team. This position offers the opportunity to gain a broad experience in both areas of Children's Occupational Therapy. From assessing and supporting children's Occupational Performance skills in everyday activities to supporting with minor works and major housing adaptations through the DFG (Disabled Facilities Grant) process.

This post will involve working in a mixture of clinics, people's homes and Schools (as part of EHCP assessment). Our service is keen to focus on evidence based family-centred care principles, and applying best practice guidelines to enable occupational participation. We are open to new ideas and constantly reviewing and modifying the way we work.

We are currently developing our Targeted offer to Schools and Parents. The post holder will work as part of team to provide advice and deliver training to other professionals and parents/carers on all aspects of Children's Occupational Therapy. They will provide clinical education and training to Occupational Therapy students and will supervise the work of the OTA’s.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

Candidates should have:

  • Degree in Occupational Therapy and HCPC registration.
  • Band 5 or Band 6 experience in Children's Occupational Therapy or an Occupational Therapy role with directly transferable skills.
  • Strong team-working skills.
  • Experience in supervising and mentoring junior staff or Students.
  • Ability to manage a varied caseload and provide high-quality care in a community setting.

Main Responsibilities

  • With support of Senior Therapists, to work as a developing specialist Children's OT. Have responsibility and accountability for own specialist caseload of open referrals within own level of competence and professional and service parameters. Applying the best available research evidence and evaluative thinking in all areas of practice.
  • To manage a varied caseload of children 0 – 18 years (special needs up to 19 years of age) and provide a quality occupational therapy service to these children and their families.
  • To participate in the development of the children's occupational therapy service in Milton Keynes.
  • To assess children and young people within the CDC and home environment relating to their daily living activities. To assess for seating and other equipment in the home and/or in nursery/school setting.

Essential criteria

  • Substantial experience of working in paediatrics or role with transferable skills
  • Experience of organising work for self and others in an environment where there are conflicting demands and needs
  • Documented evidence of continuing professional development
  • Experience of dealing with people requiring a high degree of sensitivity and practical and/or emotional support without becoming over involved
  • To be able to apply relevant IT software to all situations as required
  • To have highly developed time management and prioritisation skills to enable the post holder to achieve plans and objectives in a timely and organised manner

Desirable criteria

  • Extensive equivalent experience in working with children/young people and their families

Qualifications

  • Recognised Occupational Therapy Degree Qualification
  • UK Health Professions Council (HCPC)– Current Licence to Practice

Desirable criteria

  • Member of Royal College of Occupational Therapy

  • Knowledge and application of standardised assessments
  • Specialist knowledge and application of OT assessments and interventions relevant to the client group
  • Knowledge of patient confidentiality, data protections and data sharing legislation
  • Understanding of clinical governance
  • Knowledge of safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children agenda

  • Knowledge of national agenda relating to children with disabilities
