Barts Health has an opportunity for a dynamic individual within their state-of-the-art oncology pharmacy department. This post offers an individual the opportunity to develop their clinical skills in Oncology and contribute to a highly motivated and innovative cancer pharmacy clinical team.

This role provides an exciting chance to further develop expertise in all aspects of oncology, gaining clinical and technical experience working with a well-established team of oncology pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.

The position is based at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, with visits to other Barts Health sites. Responsibilities include clinical screening of chemotherapy prescriptions (IV and Oral) for Medical and Haemato-oncology patients, providing clinical pharmacy services at wards and clinics, completing projects and audits, preparing guidelines, submitting new drugs, financial reporting, and staff training.

The goal is to deliver outstanding oncology pharmacy services through an in-depth understanding of the Chemotherapy Services Unit, Clinical Trials, and Oncology Clinical services. Pharmacists will receive training and undertake developmental activities to gain skills and experience in various Cancer Pharmacy activities.

Main duties of the job

The primary responsibility is to support Cancer Services and provide pharmaceutical input to oncology patients at Barts Health NHS Trust. The main outcomes include:

  • Providing comprehensive clinical pharmacy services in collaboration with the oncology team, ward team, and dispensary team.
  • Supporting high-quality, cost-effective prescribing, including participation in ward rounds, discharge planning, medication history taking, drug therapy audits, and reviews.
  • Implementing and auditing adherence to national strategies and NICE guidelines.
  • Developing prescribing and shared care guidelines, supporting requests for new drugs, and managing drug budgets.
  • Optimising medication use for cancer patients.

As part of the Band 7 team, the post holder will assist in promoting safe, cost-effective prescribing and developing clinical pharmacy services, providing support to Medical and Haemato-oncology wards.

Person specification

Qualifications

  • MPharm or equivalent
  • Registered with GPhC
  • Postgraduate certificate in pharmacy practice or equivalent
  • Independent prescribing qualification or willingness to work towards
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Pharmacy Practice or equivalent

Experience

  • Proven performance in previous roles
  • Experience in oncology pharmacy services
  • Supervisory and organizational experience
  • Teaching and training experience in hospital settings
  • Experience with aseptic procedures like radiopharmacy, chemotherapy, TPN, CIVAS, or manufacturing

Knowledge

  • Basic pharmaceutical care for oncology patients
  • Current legislation and regulations, including COSHH and safety acts
  • Standards and guidelines relevant to oncology
  • Principles of aseptics and parenteral preparation
  • Stock control and medication handling safety
  • Adherence to SOPs and legislation
