St George’s University Hospital Foundation Trust is looking for an enthusiastic Occupational Therapist to join us on a fixed term contract as a Band 6 within our acute and rehabilitation services. The fixed term contract will end on 10th July 2026.


St George’s occupational therapists work in specialist multi-disciplinary
therapy services that have a strong focus on patient experience and continual improvement. The post offers the opportunity to be part of a friendly, dynamic and forward-thinking teaching Trust. We are looking for a dedicated occupational therapist who is motivated and keen to develop their clinical specialist knowledge and skills.

Main duties of the job

Rotation covers: STAR, MAU, Cardiac & Renal, Haem-Oncology, Hand Therapy, Amputee Rehab, Trauma & Orthopaedics, Ortho-Geriatrics, Vascular & Surgery

Current gap will be in Amputee Rehabilitation @ QMH

Specialist therapy role providing daily support and supervision to occupational therapists working within in the team and across the wider Trust

Provision of assessment and treatment of complex clinical caseload and support for other team members with their treatment plans and clinical reasoning to facilitate safe and timely discharge.

Organises and provides clinical supervision, teaching, completion of audit and service improvement projects.

Assists with programme for occupational therapy student placements- annual review and planning of placements, including allocation and induction.

The post also supports weekend working in Medicine, STAR Trauma and Orthopaedics and Plastics and Neurosciences.

This role is integral to the delivery of specialist Occupational Therapy services across a number of different clinical specialties in the organization.

The responsibilities of this post include timely OT assessment and treatment of patients across a variety of clinical areas in the Trust

This post is also involved with service development projects, student supervision and staff management.

Skills
  • • Good Clinical Reasoning skills
  • • Ability to organize, prioritise and delegate.
  • • Ability to document legible and accurate notes in English using the SOAP note writing system according to local standards.
  • • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in the English language.
  • • Basic Wheelchair Assessment and Prescription skills
  • • Group work skills.
  • • Ability to work under pressure.
  • • Flexible working approach
  • • Able to work at moderate to high levels of physical activity involving the delivery of manual therapy, therapeutic handling of patients and the assessment, demonstration and installation of adaptations and equipment.
  • • Basic Splinting/ Hand Therapy Skills

  • • Able to alter their working patterns to include working extended hours, unsociable hours, and weekend working. This may be via additional hours or a shift pattern.

Qualifications and Training
  • • Diploma / Degree in Occupational Therapy
  • • Continued Professional Development including evidence of reflective practice, and clinical experience gained
Experience
  • • 18 months post-qualification Occupational Therapy clinical experience, at least a year of which must have been in an acute setting.
  • • 1 year’s previous NHS experience either as a qualified Occupational Therapist (substantive or locum) or as an undergraduate Occupational Therapy Student.
  • • Working as part of an MDT team within a clinical environment.
  • • Delegation to support staff.
  • • Experience of general assessment and intervention with patients in a physical setting (e.g. medical, surgical, trauma and orthopaedics and neurology patients).
  • • Clinical Audit / Research
Knowledge
  • • Clear demonstrable understanding of the OT process
  • • Clear understanding of Evidence Based Practice.
  • • Working knowledge of functional and standardised assessment tools
  • • Knowledge of current OT and Government initiatives
  • • Understanding of the legal responsibilities of the working as a healthcare professional.
  • • Understanding of Clinical Governance and implications for Occupational Therapy services including experience of quality issues and audit.
  • • Able to work within Trust’s policies of data protection, equal opportunities and Health and Safety to meet the needs of the patients
