The University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust is one of the largest Trusts in the country. An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and motivated Specialist Nurse with cardiology experience to join our multidisciplinary Nuclear Medicine team at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. Training will be given in all aspects of Nuclear Medicine if required.

The successful applicant will be responsible for leading the stress component of our Nuclear Cardiology service, supported by the department manager and the specialist nursing team.

The role also supports general Nuclear Medicine at Glenfield Hospital with a possible occasional rotation to the Leicester Royal Infirmary.

The Nuclear Medicine service has 4 gamma cameras (three with SPECT/CT capability and one solid state cardiac camera. The department also operates a non-imaging service, an on-site radiopharmacy and an expanding molecular radiotherapy service.

We support research and development within the Trust, have links with local Universities and are an accredited training centre.

Leicester is a vibrant, multicultural city with good transport links and is within easy reach of the Peak District countryside and London by train.

Job responsibilities

Provide effective leadership and maintain a high standard of professional practice in accordance with professional codes of practice and Trust policies.

Perform, teach and develop the non-medically led stress myocardial perfusion service

Perform medically unsupervised preparation, intravenous cannulation and administration of intravenous drugs, pharmacological stress agents and radioisotopes according to patient group directives and departmental policies. Provide supplementary departmental intravenous training for the administration of pharmacological stress agents.

Assess and use clinical history and patient information to evaluate referrals, assess suitability for the stress procedure and determine the appropriate imaging procedure and stress protocol. Communicate effectively with referrers, radiologists and other staff to ensure any relevant clinical information is obtained and disseminated.

Communicate effectively with the patient in order to relay information requirements of procedural instructions. Communicate condition related information.

Be an interactive and effective clinical member of the Nuclear Medicine team. Ensure compliance with the Trusts health and Safety and Risk management policies and procedures. Establish and maintain safe systmes of work within the work environment, to ensure health, safety and welfare of staff members, patients and visitors.

Work with the IRMER certificate holders, the Head of Nuclear Medicine, Nuclear Medicine managers at GH and the LRI to implement clinical and developmental changes; develop new clinical procedures and techniques. Create and develop protocols of care and design patient pathways. Develop, promote and demonstrate best practice and facilitate the integration of new research theory into practice.

Work with the Nuclear Medicine management team to monitor capacity and demand and revise booking schedules to meet waiting times targets.

Act as the safety supervisor for the cardiac stress service, monitoring and ensuring the safety of staff, patients and visitors.

Promote, teach and develop the extended role of the cardiac stress practitioner.

To support all aspects of Nuclear Medicine across the two sites including: preparation, dispensing and administering radiopharmaceuticals and allied pharmceuticals for common diagnostic procedures performed in Nuclear Medicine: the consent, counselling of patients receiving radioactive substances.

Perform nursing duties within Nuclear Medicine and the broader CMG as required. Administering radiopharmaceuticals, assisting with patient preparation and imaging procedures, obtaining blood specimens, advising on patient related issues e.g. patient care, infection prevention and patient experience.

Regularly perform checks and refresh knowledge of the cardiac crash trolleys. Educate and train cardiac stress staff and non-stress staff in specific crash procedures.

Maintain Immediate Life Support (ILS) certificate. Provide training in the understanding of ECG to aid interpretation of pharmacological stress procedures.

Report and manage clinical incidents. Report via the datix system.. Regularly check departmental equipment and report any defects in liaison with Medical Physics.

Exercise a duty of care over Trust property and manage departmental security objectives.

Perform other duties within Nuclear Medicine as required to support the service.
