Job description

The successful candidate will join our small team serving University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust, based on the Derby site. We manage internal quality control and external quality assessment for all systems within our quality improvement role, working closely with clinical services to develop point-of-care clinical services across Derbyshire.

This is a part-time position for 18.75 hours per week.

Candidates must demonstrate strong communication skills, be self-motivated, and organized to work effectively as part of a flexible team. Previous experience in a point-of-care team or providing clinical services directly to patients is advantageous.

The laboratory operates Monday to Friday, ensuring point-of-care services are available to clinical teams year-round.

Applicants must have demonstrable pathology laboratory experience. A valid driving license is essential as travel within Derbyshire and Staffordshire is required.

The Point-of-Care Technologies department regularly holds sweat testing and breath hydrogen clinics in clinical settings. Direct patient care skills and interpersonal skills are desirable, as the department handles various direct and telephone queries.

Supported point-of-care analytics include: GEM5000 blood gas analysers, Freestyle Precision Pro blood glucose and ketones meters, CoaguChek Pro II INR meters, Haemoglobin meters, Affinion 2 HbA1c analysers, StatSensor eGFR analyser, Wescor Macroduct sweat collection system, Abbott ID NOW Influenza A&B.

Responsibilities include:
  1. Communicating authorized test results by telephone and/or in writing, providing advice on samples and tests.
  2. Informing requesting sources of incorrect requests and samples for action.
  3. Training staff in the correct and safe use of point-of-care technologies.
  4. Assisting with induction and training of new laboratory staff.
  5. Ensuring safety and infection control standards are maintained, acting as a role model.
  6. Providing support and training on POC equipment across all UHDB sites.
