PERSON SPECIFICATION

The role of the Learning Support Assistant requires a dedicated professional with experience, skills, and personal qualities to establish immediate close working relationships with young people with SEND and the wider curriculum and support team.

Essential:

  • Experience of working with vulnerable young people with SEND including Neurodiversity and SEMH challenges.
  • Commitment to improving opportunities for young people with SEND, especially in independence, health, well-being, social inclusion, and work opportunities.
  • Proven communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills with the capacity to motivate others.
  • High levels of personal integrity and confidentiality.
  • Ability to develop creative methods to engage young people, with a calm and positive approach.
  • Self-motivation and proactive approach within a structured framework.
  • Understanding of health and safety, equality and diversity, safeguarding, and SEND legislation such as EHCPs.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and IT systems, including promoting the use of Assistive Technology.
  • Level 2 or equivalent qualification in English and maths.

Desirable:

  • Level 2 qualification in learning support or related discipline.
  • Use of a car for travel across college sites is desirable.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Implement effective strategies to support diverse learning needs, promoting independence, tailored to individual EHCPs, support plans, assessments, and targets.
  • Assist teaching staff in delivering outstanding teaching and learning, including the use of specialist assistive technology, to help students achieve their outcomes.
  • Interpret instructions effectively to support students and facilitate communication challenges, ensuring equal access.
  • Maintain accurate records and contribute to setting and monitoring individual targets, including EHCP reviews.
  • Support students with study skills, pastoral needs, and community access, in 1:1 or group settings.
  • Assist with personal care, mobility, medication, and support for students with complex needs.
  • Support students in work experience opportunities, liaising with employers and maintaining records.
  • Adhere to confidentiality, health and safety, equality, diversity, inclusion, and safeguarding policies.
  • Participate in curriculum activities, meetings, and professional development.
