Job summary

Cygnet Hospital Taunton is opening a new 15-bed neuro-cognitive service to provide long-term inpatient care for older adults with complex cognitive and neurological conditions. We seek a Specialist Speech and Language Therapist to join the team, with scope to progress to Highly Specialist within an expanding SLT service.

  • Degree or equivalent in Speech and Language Therapy with HCPC registration.
  • Membership of the RCSLT.

Responsibilities

  • Assess speech, communication and language needs (SCLN) and eating, drinking and swallowing (EDS).
  • Deliver input per SLT pathway for neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative services.
  • Work with a multi-disciplinary team on-site and support workforce upskilling.
  • Engage in CPD and contribute to service development.

Post: Specialist / Highly Speech & Language Therapist (Band 6 / Band 7 equivalent) Salary: £40,966-£50,632 per year (dependent on experience) Contract: Full time, permanent

Job Role

Due to the opening of a new service, an exciting opportunity has become available for a Specialist Speech and Language Therapist to join our team at Cygnet Hospital Taunton. This role is suitable for a Specialist SLT who is interested in consolidating their practice or an established Specialist SLT who ready to take the next step in their career to a Highly Specialist role. Cygnet Taunton is opening a new 15-bed neuro-cognitive service, which will provide comprehensive, long-term inpatient care for older adults living with complex cognitive and neurological conditions alongside a psychiatric sequela. The Neurocognitive Health Pathway offers patients an improved quality of life and improved functionality often not easily available to them due to their complex psychiatric and physical presentations. Treatment and therapy is provided to optimise their abilities and reduce the impact of the neurodegenerative diagnosis they have; providing a stabilisation of symptoms and symptom management which reduces complications and preserves independence as long as possible. Care and treatment is delivered within a safe, structured, and therapeutic environment by an interdisciplinary team.

As an SLT you will be working directly with a specialist caseload of patients with complex needs to assess their speech, communication and language needs (SCLN) as well as eating, drinking and swallowing (EDS) needs. You will work deliver input in line with the Cygnet SLT pathway for neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative services. As part of a multi-disciplinary team on-site, you will also work with colleagues across the service to support the implementation of management approaches, upskilling the workforce as required. You will be part of a company-wide SLT service and as such will have the opportunity to participate in large-scale projects. You will receive high quality supervision and be supported with CPD.

Qualifications
  • A degree / postgraduate diploma (or equivalent) in Speech and Language Therapy, registration with HCPC (Health Care Professions Council) and membership of the RCSLT (Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists)
Competencies & Experience
  • Competency to independently assess and manage EDS needs (essential)
  • Experience in the field of older adults, neurology and / or neurodegenerative conditions evidenced by high level of clinical SLT knowledge.
  • Understanding of Positive Behaviour Support with an emphasis on person-centred planning
  • Evidence of being a strong team player with a genuine desire to help others
  • Excellent communication / time management skills
