Job description

Specialist Grade In Paediatric and TYA Oncology and Haematology

The Paediatric Oncology and Haematology department at Leeds Children's Hospital is looking to appoint a Specialist Grade Doctor to a permanent post:

The post will be adapted based on previous experience and ongoing needs of the appointee, but will primarily be outpatient/day care based. If the post-holder is approaching or has completed CCT, they will be given significant clinical responsibility within the department, with consultant support.

The Paediatric Oncology & Haematology Department at Leeds Children's Hospital is a principal treatment centre treating all newly diagnosed children from the region. It handles approximately 130 new referrals of children and teenagers with malignant disease per year. The service is delivered by a large, comprehensive multi-professional team in both in-patient and out-patient settings, including day care facilities. The centre is also a tertiary benign paediatric haematology centre with a large population of children with bleeding disorders and haemoglobinopathies. The wider children's hospital offers a full range of paediatric subspecialties, including congenital cardiac surgery, renal transplantation, and a supra-regional liver transplant service.

Main duties of the job

The core duties include:

  1. Attend consultant-led clinics: review on-treatment and follow-up patients, assess patients for chemotherapy, and arrange investigations. Review acute walk-in patients as needed. Prescribe chemotherapy (using Chemocare) in collaboration with paediatric oncology pharmacists. Conduct follow-up clinics and assess acute admissions alongside other doctors and ACPs. Contribute to non-malignant haematology clinics, particularly in haemoglobinopathies.
  2. Attend MDT and clinical-radiology meetings: Participate in weekly oncology and leukaemia MDTs, radiology review meetings, and ward rounds, including weekend work.
  3. Clinical Governance/Quality Improvement: Engage in the department's clinical governance activities, including patient safety, infection prevention, and chemotherapy governance meetings.
  4. Bone marrow and lumbar puncture procedures: Perform bone marrows and lumbar punctures. Once trained and assessed competent, administer intra-thecal chemotherapy.
