Specialist Grade in General Adult Psychiatry in Riviera Torquay

We are seeking a Specialist Grade Doctor within the Torbay Local Delivery Unit (LDU) of the AdultClinical Directorate. It is a post for aGeneral Adult Psychiatrist for patients age 18-65 years old (population 23,535)serving a large urban community in Torbay. Our Trust has worked closely withthe commissioners to redesign the service and the recently formed Adult LDU forTorbay is divided into three teams of a broadly equitable population size basedon GP patches.

The teamconsists of a full time Clinical Team Leader, Mental Health Nurses,Occupational Therapists, Social Workers and Support Time and Recovery Workers.All 3 Community Mental Health Teams in Torbay share an Accommodation officer, aPersonality Disorder Lead and a Carers support team. The team has a strong MDTapproach and works in a cohesive manner to fulfil the role of offering aneffective and safe recovery focussed service to people referred into the team.

This team has accessto specialist psychological therapy at STEP 4 provided by the Psychology andPsychological therapy Team. The post holder will provide medical adviceregarding the on-going management of people who use services under the GPs. Tosupport the role of the team the national guidance (DoH 2005, GMC 2005) on newways of working for psychiatrists and their teams has been adopted. The roleand responsibility of the specialist doctors in multidisciplinary teams hasbeen agreed by the Trust board and is outlined above.

Main duties of the job

The post holderwill be currently based at the Health and Wellbeing Clinic, (Chadwell Centre)within the Paignton area, where private office space with PC accessibility andIT support is available and appropriate secretarial support will be provided.There is another clinic located in Torbay Health & Wellbeing Hub at HaytorUnit, Torbay Hospital, Lowes Bridge, Torquay TQ2 7AA, should there be clinicalnecessity for the service user and their family to be seen there.

You will offerassessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients as well as other expertclinical services in Paignton and Brixham.

  • Good knowledge of clinical risk management.
  • Good knowledge of evidence based strategies for management of psychiatric disorder
  • Ability to apply psychological models to practical situations.
  • Understanding of NHS organisational arrangements including social care
Experience
  • Minimum of 12 years medical work (either continuous period or in aggregate) since obtaining a primary medical qualification of which a minimum of six years should have been in a relevant specialty in the Specialty Doctor and/or closed SAS grades. Equivalent years experience in a relevant specialty from other medical grades including from overseas will also be accepted.

  • Experience at senior level working in the field of Psychiatry
  • Experience of Home Treatment or equivalent

Qualifications
  • MB BS or equivalent
  • GMC registration.
  • Membership or Affiliateship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent.
  • Approved under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983.
