Specialist Grade in Emergency & Urgent Care

We are looking for a motivated and innovative Specialist Grade inEmergency & Urgent Care (Equivalent to General Practitioner with SpecialistInterest in Emergency & Urgent Care) to work in the Emergency and UrgentIntegrated Care Departments at Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust. This role maysuit an experienced General Practitioner looking for a new challenge

The successful applicant will work as an integral member of ourmultidisciplinary team, comprising of nursing staff, advanced clinicalpractitioners, junior and senior clinical fellows along with our substantiveConsultant Physicians in Emergency Medicine.

You will have the opportunity to manage a range of acute medicalproblems and to develop your clinical leadership within these areas. Thisincludes developing urgent care pathways to complement those already inoperation and play a key role in the interface between primary and secondarycare.

The team works equally across 2 sites, with Pinderfields Hospital beingour Major Emergency Department and designated Major Trauma Unit. Both Dewsburyand Pinderfields have 24/7 separate dedicated childrens EDs, and an UrgentIntegrated Care team consisting of GPs and ACPs.

Main duties of the job

An interface role between primary care andsecondary care looking at how we can support getting patients to the rightservice in a timely fashion

Developing clinical pathways which span theprimary care/secondary care interface

Contributing to clinical governance and qualityimprovement within urgent and emergency care

Contributing to the ongoing education of themultidisciplinary team in urgent and emergency care

Maintenance of the highest clinical standards inassessment, diagnosis and management of patients presenting to the EmergencyDepartment and Urgent Integrated Care Stream.

Development of services and pathways across theprimary and secondary care interface and between ED, UIC, and acute medicine

Provide senior support, leadership and formalclinical supervision to medical trainees and advanced clinical practitioners(ACPs)

To actively participate in continuingprofessional development (CPD) and departmental meetings

Job responsibilities

This post isoffered on a full time (10 PA) basis although less than full time applicationswill be considered. There is also the potential for the post-holder to agree ajob plan up to a maximum 12 PA. The post will complement our existing workforceand individuals will work cross-site but the successful applicant will workpredominantly at either Pinderfields or Dewsbury and District Hospital. Thepost holder will be expected to work without direct supervision at all times.

TheEmergency Department within the Trust consists of 34 substantive Consultants. The Department is supported by SpecialistRegistrars, Trust Grade doctors, Core Medical Trainees, GP VTS Trainees andfoundation doctors. This is a new post being offered to complement the existingworkforce.

Supporting Professional Activities in accordance with theTrust Framework, with at least aminimum of 1 SPAs included in the core 10PA timetable. Additional SPA or DCCtime may be commissioned in line with the skills of the successful candidateand changing requirements of the service.

Applicants will be registered withthe General Medical Council. Applicants with a registration on the GeneralPractitioner Register by the time of appointment would be desirable but notessential. Applicants are required to have evidence of recent continuedacademic and professional development. Excellent communication, listening andorganisational skills are essential.

The rota covers both Pinderfields andDewsbury sites Monday Sunday with PA re-numeration according to RCEMguidelines.

Meet the entry criteria for the grade
  • A minimum of 12 years full time postgraduate training (or equivalent gained either part time or through Less Than Full Time Training) since obtaining a primary medical qualification
  • A minimum of 6 years experience in the Specialty Doctor/SAS Grade or equivalent in Emergency Medicine specialty or similar specialty
  • Shall meet the criteria set out in the Specialist Grade Generic Capabilities
  • Evidence of independent clinical practice
  • Experience working in emergency, urgent or acute care in the NHS independently.
  • Applicants knowledge is up to date & is safe to practice.
  • Capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge relevant to the job.
  • Experience in making clinical decisions & managing risk. Knows when to seek help, able to prioritise clinical need.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a high-pressure, high-volume department.
  • Ability to think laterally and work with the wider MDT and with the ED and primary care interfaces.
  • Experience working in emergency medicine, acute medicine or SDEC.
