Job Description

We are seeking a Technical Support Office (TSO) colleague to provide worldwide plan approval services to shipbuilders, ship owners, and manufacturers. The role involves appraising marine electrical and control design aspects according to international standards and class rule sets, supporting design appraisal for new builds, conversions, and existing vessels, and providing technical support to ship designers and operators.

The successful candidate will be based at the LR Southampton Office, United Kingdom.

The Role
  • Work as part of the Global Electrical & Control Discipline team, conducting design appraisal and consultancy on Class Rules and statutory codes.
  • Approve electrical and control equipment against statutory codes and Class Rules; perform Type Approval activities.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients and internal stakeholders.
  • Provide technical advice to clients globally, including designers, shipyards, and surveyors.
  • Contribute to Rule Development Projects and proposals to keep rules current with industry innovations.
  • Assist in bidding processes by estimating time and defining scopes of work.
  • Deliver quality outputs within agreed parameters and review colleagues’ work.
  • Ensure client satisfaction and explore new business opportunities.
  • Follow internal procedures, accreditation standards, legislation, and industry norms.
What You Bring
  • A degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic/Telecommunication Engineering, Marine Engineering, or equivalent.
  • Experience with electrical/control design and applying Class Rules to ship construction; offshore or naval experience is a plus.
  • Membership of a professional institution; Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status.
  • Ability to work independently and in teams, prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and work under pressure.
  • Proficiency in English (written and spoken), with skills in technical reporting.
  • Understanding of Classification Society responsibilities and the interface between Class Rules and Statutory Regulations is preferred.
