Job description
Overview

The post will be based in the Department of General Surgery. This is a new post designed to support the general surgery service. The primary purpose of the role will be to support elective day case clinical activity in the general surgery and upper GI firms with a degree of flexibility depending on precise requirements. The post holder will perform independent general surgery outpatient clinics and will be allocated sufficient admin time to independently manage the output from these clinics. The post-holder will have access to theatre with sessions annualised to allow the ability to cover vacant lists, and their job-plan will be such as to allow sufficient freedom to provide such cover. It is anticipated that the post-holder will cover these lists independently and without direct consultant supervision. The main procedures will be laparoscopic cholecystectomy, open and laparoscopic hernia repairs and lumps and bumps. The post-holder will also be expected to provide support to the existing team in managing general surgery patients and supervising resident doctors. The post holder will be expected to attend Consultant meetings, M&M meetings and teaching sessions.

This will be a 10 PA post with an average of 8 PAs of direct clinical care and 2 SPA.

Responsibilities and duties
  • Work in partnership with the department to support elective day case clinical activity in the general surgery and upper GI firms.
  • Perform independent general surgery outpatient clinics with allocated admin time to manage clinic output.
  • Cover theatre lists as allocated, with annualised sessions to enable vacant list coverage, with the expectation to cover independently and without direct consultant supervision.
  • Carry out main procedures including laparoscopic cholecystectomy, open and laparoscopic hernia repairs, and management of lumps and bumps.
  • Support the existing team in managing general surgery patients and supervising resident doctors.
  • Attend Consultant meetings, M&M meetings and teaching sessions.
  • Contribute to teaching and training as part of the department’s education programs.

About the Trust

Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is an integrated care trust providing hospital and community health services for Hackney, the City and surrounding communities. The Trust offers adult, older people’s and children’s services across medical and surgical specialties. The Trust operates acute services from Homerton University Hospital and is rated by the Care Quality Commission as ‘Outstanding’. The hospital has nearly 500 beds, a ten-bed ICU, and maternity, paediatric and neonatal wards. Community services are delivered from multiple sites in Hackney and the City of London. The Trust also provides continuing health care at Mary Seacole Nursing Home.

The hospital has three day-surgery theatres and six main operating theatres for general surgery, trauma and orthopaedics, gynaecology, maxillofacial, urology, ENT, obesity, bariatrics and obstetrics, with a surgical treatment room within the main theatres complex. The Trust provides some highly specialised tertiary services, including bariatric surgery and the Regional Neurological Rehabilitation Unit. It is designated as a perinatal centre with obstetric and neonatal services.

Education, research and audit

The post holder will be expected to participate in teaching and training of postgraduate doctors, which may include acting as an educational supervisor with regular appraisal and support. The Trust supports quality medical education funded via the SIFT contract and requires consultant staff to support undergraduate teaching activities. The Trust is keen to support high quality research and development; all R&D is coordinated by the Trust’s R&D office, which will advise on governance and intellectual property as needed.

Audit and administration: The post holder will contribute to the department’s ongoing clinical audit program and carry out administrative duties associated with patient care.
