Job overview

We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic and motivated General Adult Specialist Grade Psychiatrist to work in the Sutton and Cheam IRH in the heart of South West London

The teams provide care for working age adults who live in Sutton and experience severe or enduring mental illness. The IRH is one of five within the borough, with care provided according to GP/PCN alignment. The post sits within a well-established MDT that works alongside a separate Consultant-led Assessment team and interfaces with a Consultant-led Home Treatment Team and in-patient wards. There are also specialist teams for Early Intervention in Psychosis, and Personality Disorder.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will work alongside a full-time consultant and will be responsible for providing high quality psychiatric care to patients under the care of the teams, contribute to the training of core and higher psychiatry trainees along side the Consultants as lead, and will also contribute to the teaching of St George’s University of London Medical Students. They will work closely with a Team managers, an advanced clinical practitioner and a dedicated Clinical Service Manager for the Borough. Supervisory support is available from the Team Consultant and Associate Clinical Director for Wandsworth.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

If you are a dynamic and established specialist psychiatrist fully registered with the GMC as well as holding S12 approval under the Mental Health Act or are a specialty doctor within six – nine months of being eligible for this grade, we would be delighted to hear from you.

To be eligible for this Speciality Grade role, it is a requirement that you have a minimum 12 years clinical experience 6 of which must be in Psychiatry.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Primary Medical degree
  • Full GMC registration
  • Section 12 Approval
  • Approved Clinician status
  • Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists
  • Qualification in a talking therapy such as CBT, DIT or MBT
  • Qualifications in change management and service development skills
CLINICAL EXPERIENCE
  • Completed a minimum of 12 years’ medical work (either continuous period or in aggregate) since obtaining a primary medical qualification of which a minimum of six years should have been in a relevant specialty in the Specialty Doctor and/or closed SAS grades. Equivalent years’ experience in a relevant specialty from other medical grades including from overseas will also be accepted
  • A detailed knowledge of main treatment approaches for severe mental illness including psychopharmacological interventions
  • Knowledge and experience of the CPA process, risk assessment and risk management
  • Experience of teaching medical and non-medical staff, including those who may not have a formal qualification
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
  • Broad knowledge of the biological, psychological and social determinants of mental disorders in old age and evidence-based management interventions
  • A detailed knowledge of main treatment approaches for severe mental illness including psychopharmacological interventions
  • Ability to provide medical and mental health assessments, formulate diagnoses and initiate treatment plans
  • Ability to treat service users with respect and dignity at all times, adopting a culturally sensitive approach
  • Ability to plan treatment programmes in conjunction with multi-disciplinary team
  • Able to work effectively in a team Able to build constructive relationships
  • Person-centred in clinical approach
  • Basic IT skills
  • Up to date knowledge of recent DH documentation and NICE Guidelines
  • Advanced IT literacy
  • Practical experience in a short-term psychological therapy

RESEARCH AND AUDIT
  • Keeps up-to-date with current research and best practice in the individual’s specific area of practice, through appropriate continuing professional development activities and their own independent study and reflection.
  • Critically appraises and understands the relevance of the literature, conducting literature searches and reviews; disseminates best practice including from quality improvement projects.
  • Locates and uses clinical guidelines appropriately.
  • Communicates and interprets research evidence in a meaningful way for patients to support shared decision-making.
  • Experience of carrying out an audit project.
