Job Description:

NHS Scotland is committed to encouraging equality and diversity among our workforce and eliminating unlawful discrimination. The aim is for our workforce to be truly representative and for each employee to feel respected and able to give their best. To this end, NHS Scotland welcomes applications from all sections of society.

NHS Ayrshire and Arran are pleased to offer an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our team as a Specialist Doctor in Dermatology.

The successful candidate will complement the team of five friendly and welcoming consultants. We are a strong team with diverse specialist skills and experience who support each other and our patients as we strive to deliver the best possible care. It is an exciting time for service development that you could help drive and design.

Dermatology is a specialty within the Surgical Services Directorate which is part of Acute Services. The department provides treatment and healthcare on an area basis for a population of approximately 388,000. The Department is based in University Hospital Crosshouse, Kilmarnock (with some clinics at University Hospital Ayr). Applicants will be expected to work across both sites when required.

Ayrshire offers spectacular countryside and coastline to explore, world-renowned golfing all within easy reach of the vibrant, cosmopolitan city of Glasgow and the south side leafy suburbs with excellent schooling.

The unit has busy Day Treatment Units at Crosshouse and Ayr providing dressings, TL01, and PUVA. Minor surgery facilities are available in the Dermatology Centre as well as in the clinic areas. Specialist dermatology nurses operate review clinics primarily for eczema and psoriasis patients and for those patients on isotretinoin and biologic therapy. There are seven nurse biopsy specialists.

The unit is supported by 4 permanent Consultant Dermatologists and 1 bank Consultant Dermatologist plus 1 FY2 doctor, 2 GPST, 1 SpR doctor, 3 Specialty Doctors, 4 GPwER, a Senior Charge Nurse, a Skin Cancer Nurse Specialist, 3 Nurse Practitioners, and a team of experienced Dermatology Nurses.

The Terms and Conditions of service are those determined by the New Specialist Doctor Contract (Scotland) 2022 and are offered on a 9+1 programmed activity basis. Applications from individuals who may wish to work fewer programmed activities or on a job share basis will be considered. Opportunities may exist for Extra Programmed Activities subject to service requirements. The post may involve participation on the 9am-5pm duty rota Monday to Friday.

Applicants for this post should meet the entry criteria to the Specialist grade and shall have full registration and a Licence to Practice with the General Medical Council; and shall have completed a minimum of 10 years’ medical work (either continuous period or in aggregate) since obtaining a primary medical qualification, of which a minimum of six years should have been in a relevant specialty in the Specialty Doctor and/or closed SAS grades. Equivalent years’ experience in a relevant specialty from other medical grades including from overseas will also be accepted. Applicants shall meet the criteria set out in the Specialist grade generic capabilities framework. Previous NHS experience is highly advantageous.

The post is intended as full-time (10PAs, 9 DCC, 1 SPA); any candidate who, for personal reasons, is unable to work whole-time is eligible to be considered for the post on a less than full-time contract.
