Specialist Diabetes Lead Midwife

Would you like to work in a highly motivated and friendly Maternity team covering Bath, North East Somerset and West Wiltshire? This is an exciting opportunity to work within a specialist team providing complex care. This post will enable you to develop your leadership skills and gain knowledge as the lead Midwife for diabetes in our maternity services.

As an expert specialist resource in diabetes you will be responsible for providing midwifery care, co-ordinating and developing services provided to pregnant women with pre-existing Diabetes or Gestational Diabetes. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary team providing high quality, effective midwifery evidence-based and woman centred care and will promote a positive working environment.

Rated 'Outstanding' in our latest CQC review, our service consists of an acute and 2 standalone birth centres. We also have 2 community midwifery led hubs, a 24 hour Maternity Assessment Unit and are in the planning stages of an alongside midwifery unit at the RUH site.

Main duties of the job

To provide expert advice, support and facilitation to the multi-professional team

To work closely with the obstetric and diabetes consultants and diabetes specialist nurses in the development of evidence-based guidelines, standards of care and practical advice to women and their partner's parents who have diabetes or gestational diabetes.

To work in partnership with women and their families, oversee the planning and implementation of individualised care pathways, continually assessing, analysing and determining appropriate courses of action.

To be responsible for the planning, implementation and presenting of regular audits.

To be responsible for continuous collection and annual submission of data required for National Diabetes In Pregnancy (NPID) Audit report.

To work with the Antenatal Screening Team to co-ordinate the Diabetic Eye Screening in Pregnancy (DESP) programme, liaising with the service providers and Screening Quality Assurance Service (SQAS) when required.

To promote high standards of midwifery care in the maternity service, through participation in effective quality assurance measures such as clinical audit programmes and Clinical Governance.

To provide midwifery expertise, ensuring all staff are supported in their practice, including midwives and obstetricians in training, in line with the Trust's learning and development.

Qualifications
  • Registered midwife to degree level or relevant experience.
  • Significant clinical experience working at band 6 or above
  • Training/experience in Managing Conduct, Health, Sickness & Performance, Recruitment & Selection, Appraisal etc.
  • Completed additional training or education on Diabetes and its effect in pregnancy.
  • Post-registration qualification preferably in speciality area
Experience
  • Experience in service user feedback including analysing data.
  • Understanding of the principles and application of Clinical Governance.
  • Experience in complaint investigation and response.
