Overview

Medical Physics Expert - Nuclear Medicine — Band 8a Specialist Clinical Scientist (with option of Band 7 linked-progression post).

Based at Bristol Royal Infirmary, the Nuclear Medicine Physics team supports NHS diagnostic departments, private PET/CT centres, and a SIRT service. The role involves travel to partner sites and is part of the wider Diagnostic Medical Physics Group. The service includes MPE, RPA, and RWA functions, with support to a central radiopharmacy and molecular radiotherapy. The department encourages training and research, including HSST, PhD and post-doctoral opportunities.

A personalised development plan will be created for the successful candidate, with opportunities to grow and specialise.

Main duties
  • Medical Physics Expert (MPE) in diagnostic nuclear medicine and PET, providing high-quality scientific support in nuclear medicine and radiation protection to NHS hospitals and private imaging centres across Bristol and Somerset.
  • Medical Physics Expert (MPE) in therapeutic nuclear medicine to support a Selective Internal Radiotherapy (SIRT) service.
  • Provide education and training for medical physics and other staff, promote continuous improvement and innovation.
  • Involvement in equipment management and procurement, advising on purchase of equipment and software.
  • Plan and carry out research and innovation projects, develop expertise, publish and present, and apply for grant funding where appropriate.

The service has expanded to cover Somerset and established the South West's first SIRT service, offering a full physics service with certified MPEs, RPAs, and RWAs. We are involved in teaching, training, and research, hosting STP trainees and rotational placements, and contributing to national and international conferences and journals.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • BSc Hons Physics or equivalent, with relevant MSc or higher degree or specialist knowledge

  • Able to communicate highly complex information to professional groups and patients

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Advanced theoretical and practical knowledge across nuclear medicine physics and radiation protection
  • Ability to prioritise and manage own work; provide scientific leadership
  • Undertake CPD for HCPC registration and maintenance of MPE certification
  • Experience delivering teaching and training on complex subjects
  • Understanding of relevant legislation, standards and guidelines

Desirable

  • Experience planning and carrying out research; presenting and publishing
  • Systems thinking for NHS matters and involvement with quality systems and UKAS accreditation
Skills and Abilities

Essential

  • Ability to plan and organise work to provide a highly specialist clinical scientist service
  • High level of accuracy for measurements on complex nuclear medicine equipment
  • Ability to handle and transport equipment for QA tests (up to 8 kg)
  • Ability to design and develop image and data processing software
  • Proficiency with documents, spreadsheets, databases, and complex calculations (e.g., radiation dosimetry)
