Job summary

A leading mental health service provider in Exeter is seeking a Specialist Clinical Psychologist to join their team. This role involves providing psychological care within the Macleod Diabetes and Endocrinology Service, working closely with patients with chronic health conditions. The successful candidate will have experience in leadership, comprehensive knowledge in clinical health psychology, and will contribute to innovative care pathways. This 1.0 wte 8a post (flexible workingconsidered) provides embedded psychological care within the Macleod Diabetesand Endocrinology Service (MDEC), Royal Devon University Hospital in Exeter. You will work with diabetes, endocrinology andmedical obesity patients. There will bepotential to work with MDTs, provide training, support and supervision to staffas well as maintaining a clinical caseload. Both elements of the post will havea service development role to continue developing psychological care pathwayswith the local Primary Care Talking Therapies team.

This role requires face toface presence in the teams for the majority of the time. Opportunities also exist with local clinical training courses for research andclinical placements within the service.

You will experience the benefits ofbeing part of an innovative, fast paced physical health MDT whilst also beingsupported by the Clinical Health and Neuropsychology Service within DPT. The team at MDEC have embraced psychology over the past few years and hugely value the different perspectives psychologists bring into the service.

Interviews are scheduled to take place on Thursday 6th November 2025.

Main duties of the job

The team psychologist has access to protected administrative desk space alongside a separate allocated therapy room in the building. The role encompasses both clinical care (direct patient contact) alongside systemic approaches including a recent focus on psychological informed care and environments.

Attendance at medical obesity MDT meetings every other week on a Wednesday is essential as is diabetes MDT on a Thursday.

There is flexibility around the types of therapeutic approaches offered in the service and further training that could support this. At the moment a range is offered including 3rd wave CBT, trauma focused approaches and longer term attachment informed interventions.

Job responsibilities

The principal purpose of the job is to improve thepsychological health & wellbeing of people served by Royal Devon University Hosptial (Exeter) services forobesity and endocrine disorders.

This will be achieved in this post by:

  • Ensuring the systematic provision of a high quality psychological service to theClinical Health & Neuropsychology Services in Exeter, East & Mid Devonas a key component of integrated mental health and wellbeing services (DPTPsychological Medicine) to the Royal Devon & Exeter (RD&E) NHSFoundation Trust.
  • Providingclinical leadership, co-ordination and supervision for staff, trainees andvolunteers employed by or attached to the psychology service.
  • Taking aleadership role in the EMOS and endocrinology services for the Clinical Health& Neuropsychology Services.
  • Carrying aspecialist caseload of clients, and providing advice and consultancy topatients and professionals.
  • To workautonomously within professional guidelines and exercise responsibility for thesystematic governance of psychological practice within the Clinical Health& Neuropsychology Services.
  • The postholder with receive regular professional and clinical supervision in accordanceto Trust policy and to Professional Practice Guidelines set out by the BritishPsychological Society or appropriate designated Professional Body.
  • Contributing to the management of thePsychology and Psychological Therapies directorate.

Person Specification
Knowledge and skills
  • Broad knowledge of clinical health psychology services; and of the services in the NHS where clinical health psychology is commonly applied
  • Extensive knowledge of the knowledge base, skills and practice of Clinical Psychology
  • Knowledge of the policy context of services to the acute hospitals Trust and of leadership in this setting
  • Excellent verbal, nonverbal and written communication skills
  • Strong leadership qualities, resilience and ability to handle ambiguity and uncertainty.
  • Skills in managing conflict, negotiation & achieving consensus in complex situations in the pursuit of agreed strategic aims
  • Ability to integrate complex data; make highly skilled evaluations and decisions; and take a long term perspective.
  • Organisation and time management skills
  • Advanced psychological assessment and formulation skills including risk assessment.
Experience
  • Experience of work in psychology services across a range of medical service settings or agencies
  • Experience of teaching, training and/or supervision
  • Experience in undertaking leadership roles within clinical psychology services in the NHS, and in contributing to the development, implementation and evaluation of strategies and clinical policies in multi disciplinary, multi agency contexts
  • Experience, and/or training in diversity awareness and social inequality
Qualifications
  • Qualified Clinical/Counselling Psychologist (D.Clin.Psychol. or equivalent), eligible for Chartered Clinical Psychologist Status in the British Psychological Society
  • Further training in health psychology practice
  • Further training in at least one psychological therapy
