Job description

We are looking for an enthusiastic, innovative and adaptable clinical psychologist keen to develop experience, knowledge and skills in working in paediatric surgical specialties. This is an exciting opportunity to work across the paediatric surgical psychology provision to provide assessment, formulation and interventions in innovative and compassionate ways in a fast-paced acute health setting.

This is a Band 8A post but could be offered as a Band 7 preceptorship. As a department we offer a full preceptorship development program supervised by the senior psychology team to support development to Band 8A.

Main duties of the job

To develop and provide specialist clinical health psychology services for children, young people and their parents and carers cared for by surgical specialities based on assessment of psychological needs. Care will be delivered through direct and indirect clinical work based in outpatient and inpatient clinical settings.

To provide formal and informal teaching and training for other professionals on psychological knowledge and skills applicable in the direct and indirect care of children, young people and their families with physical health conditions.

Qualifications

• Doctorate in Clinical Psychology or equivalent
• Eligible for registration with HCPC as Practitioner Psychologist
• Training and Supervision

Knowledge and Experience

• Post qualification experience of working as a clinical psychologist with children and young people who have a condition relating to health
• Post qualification experience of working as a clinical psychologist providing psychological consultation, case management supervision and training to multi-professional and multi-agency teams
• Evidence of working with multi-agency services to support smooth transitions for the patient and their carers from acute to community care, where appropriate
• Evidence of having worked in an area of clinical practice providing health psychology assessment, formualtion and intervention
• Post qualification experience of and demonstrable understanding of working as a clinical psychologist within a multi-disciplinary physical health setting
• Formal teaching/presentation sessions to health and other professionals
• Demonstrable knowledge of legislation and guidance pertaining to safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults, consent, confidentiality and standards of psychological care within relevant NICE and other guidance.
• Knowledge of the theory and practice relevant to specialised psychological assessments and interventions for children and young people requiring surgical intervention
• Evidence of applying doctoral level knowledge of research design and methodology
• Advanced communication skills with the ability to provide and receive highly complex and sensitive information to and from children and families in a culturally appropriate manner in highly emotive situations. This will include the ability to provide complex psychological information to staff in an accessible manner
• Ability to support children with complex needs and apply psychological practice in innovative and dynamic ways in a fast-paced acute inpatient health setting

Skills and abilities

• Ability to generate and deliver systemic and individual psychological formulations and interventions based on the needs of children, young people and their parents/carers
• Ability to access, record and manage information and data pertaining to the work undertaken in medical and psychology notes, data bases and electronic records as required
• Ability to prioritise and manage available time for clinical work and professional activities effectively and safely as well as respond to more urgent request and inpatient demands
• To skilfully and sensitively communicate complex information with children, young people, parents and carers colleagues and to overcome barriers to communication including sensory, and emotional difficulties, cultural differences and distressing information.
• Well-developed IT skills including entry and analysis of research data
• Skills in providing teaching and training to other professional groups
• Ability to manage emotionally stressful situations such as working children, young people and parents/carers who may have complex needs and who might be highly distressed or dysregulated and require compassionate care.
• Ability to identify and employ mechanisms of clinical governance as appropriate.
• Able to travel to regional clinics, meetings and home visits if required.
• Ability to assess the psychological needs of, children, young people and families, including the use of cognitive and developmental psychometric tests.
• To be skilled in the administration of psychometric and neuropsychological tests, including those that require complex manipulation of test materials
