Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for a clinical or counselling psychologist with an interest in physical health, particularly chronic pain management. The post offers opportunities to develop clinical, supervision, consultation, and teaching skills. The Trust has a strong research department with ongoing projects mainly based on audit and service evaluation. We collaborate with the University of Southampton Doctoral Training Programme and regularly host undergraduate placements from the University of Surrey and the University of Portsmouth. Our active base of PMP graduates volunteers and supports within our services.

HIOW Healthcare Trust provides high-quality pain management services for patients with persistent pain across Southampton, South East Hampshire, Fareham & Gosport, and Portsmouth. We also offer a Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Service in Portsmouth. Our psychologists work across interdisciplinary teams, including physiotherapy, nursing, OT, and doctors, all committed to psychological approaches. We provide ongoing education, training, and supervision as part of our multidisciplinary team.

Main duties of the job
  • Deliver and perform psychological interventions (mainly ACT/CBT), in consultation with the Consultant Clinical Psychologist.
  • Assess and provide psychological interventions to patients with chronic (persistent), non-malignant pain in a community outpatient setting, possibly within interdisciplinary group formats, joint appointments, or individual sessions.
  • Collaborate with managerial and clinical leads to ensure the service responds to patient needs.
  • Guide colleagues trained in other professions through teaching, supervision, and advice, including managing complex cases and co-morbidities.
  • Provide clinical supervision to members of the Persistent Pain Team regarding psychological management of chronic pain.
  • Participate in team meetings and foster interdisciplinary relationships within the Persistent Pain and Chronic Fatigue teams.
  • Supervise junior staff in psychological aspects of their practice and provide clinical and professional supervision to trainee psychologists.

Qualifications
  • Professional Qualification as Clinical or Counselling Psychologist (Doctorate or equivalent) recognized by the British Psychological Society.
  • Formal supervision training or equivalent experience.
  • Registered with the HCPC as a Practitioner Psychologist.
Desirable
  • Post-doctoral training in specialized psychological therapy areas.
  • Membership of relevant Special Interest Groups.
Experience
  • Extensive experience as a qualified clinical psychologist at a specialist level.
  • Experience in psychological assessment and treatment across various settings.
  • Experience working with diverse patient groups, maintaining professionalism under challenging circumstances.
  • Full clinical responsibility for patient care, including risk management.
  • Experience in teaching, training, supervision, and CPD evidence.
  • Effective collaboration with GPs and other healthcare professionals.
  • Ability to manage complex caseloads, prioritize, and work flexibly.
  • Self-motivated, organized, and able to work as part of a team.
Desirable
  • Knowledge of ACT and mindfulness approaches.
  • Experience with chronic pain, long-term health conditions, addiction, or substance misuse.
