Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced, enthusiastic and committed practitioner to join the Royal Marsden Hospital Children's Safeguarding team as a Band 8a Specialist Nurse for Safeguarding Children. This is a varied role including safeguarding supervision and support, delivering integrated safeguarding training, undertaking audits, and working in partnership with multiple local authorities and partnerships to protect children and young people from harm and promote their welfare.

The post holder will work with a range of key professionals to contribute to the development and delivery of services designed to safeguard children and young people and promote their welfare through safeguarding processes requiring excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Responsibilities

• Assist the Named Nurse for Safeguarding Children in leading on the application and delivery of the national and regional safeguarding agenda across the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust.
• Ensure the Trust meets legislative and statutory requirements to safeguard children as set out in Working Together to Safeguard Children (2023), the Children Acts (1989 & 2004), the National Service Framework for Children, Young People and Maternity Services (2004), and the Care Quality Commission Core Standard 7 (Safeguarding people who use services from abuse).
• Provide high-level expertise, professional leadership, advice, support and expert guidance in safeguarding children; offer professional leadership and expert advice to all Divisions in the Trust.
• Lead on multi-agency collaboration related to complex holistic discharge planning and support senior colleagues and teams.
• Assess emergency situations and provide fast, appropriate interventions; ensure effective, timely communication and information sharing internally and externally to support multidisciplinary/interagency working.
• Provide highly specialist and complex advice to a wide range of professionals regarding child safeguarding, the Mental Capacity Act, and MARAC processes, including staff working in adult services.
• Act as an autonomous, registered practitioner accountable for own actions guided by professional codes, Trust guidelines and protocols.
• Take a strategic lead in the management and coordination of Child Death Reviews and data management/reporting in line with government legislation and Local Safeguarding Children Partnership guidance.
• Support the development and completion of action plans following a child safeguarding practice review or domestic homicide review.
• Undertake a key role in safeguarding children, including those of adult patients with children, by providing safeguarding consultation, advice and supervision to all Trust staff.
• Promote a Think Family culture within the Royal Marsden NHS Trust.
• Lead on providing one-to-one and group safeguarding children supervision to a defined group of staff, ensuring supervision is recorded and programs are developed and evaluated.
• Support the development and implementation of Trust policies and guidelines in line with national and local policy and guidance.
• Support the Named Nurse for Safeguarding Children and Named Professional for Safeguarding Adults on the implementation and evaluation of the Trust’s integrated safeguarding strategy and safeguarding quality improvement programmes.

Requirements and Qualifications

• To undertake all aspects of clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner, working with the Named Nurse, Safeguarding Children, to ensure safeguarding practice and MCA compliance meet high standards and align with Trust policies.
• To lead and support senior colleagues and teams in multi-agency collaboration for complex holistic discharge planning.
• Ability to assess emergency situations and provide immediate, appropriate interventions with clear, timely communication and information sharing.
• To provide highly specialist advice to a range of professionals regarding child safeguarding, the Mental Capacity Act and MARAC processes, including staff in adult services.
• To act as an autonomous, registered practitioner, legally and professionally accountable for own actions in line with professional codes and Trust guidelines.
• To take responsibility for safeguarding governance activities including Child Death Reviews and associated data management.
• To support action plans following safeguarding reviews and contribute to safeguarding improvements across the organisation.
• To provide safeguarding consultation, advice and supervision to Trust staff and promote a family-centered approach to safeguarding.
• To participate in development and evaluation of safeguarding supervision programs and to support Trust policy development in line with national guidance.
• To support the implementation and evaluation of the Trust’s integrated safeguarding strategy and quality improvement programmes.
