Specialist Clinical/Counselling Psychologist

Are you a Clinical or Counselling Psychologist who is passionate about working with children and young people with complex presentations and would like to contribute to a high-quality CAMHS provision for the borough of Wandsworth? We are looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated Band 7 Clinical or Counselling Psychologist to work in our warm and friendly Wandsworth Single Point of Access (SPA) triage and assessment service (2 days per week) and Wandsworth T3 CAMHS Treatment team (2 days per week). Tuesdays and Wednesday are key days.

You will be registered with a professional body (HCPC) and have experience in working with children and young people in a CAMHS Community setting and providing mental health assessments, treatment and care co‑ordination. We encourage applications from newly qualified and recently qualified clinicians and applicants from diverse backgrounds.

We value inclusivity in our service and are actively working in partnership with community organisations to reach young people who find 'traditional' routes of mental health services not accessible to them. Furthermore, there is a supportive network of psychologists within the service and there is a regular psychology meeting and also an EDI Reflective space monthly. We recognise the importance of staff development and career progression and there are exciting CPD opportunities within the service and Trust, with staff having had trainings such as EMDR, NVR and DBT.

Main duties of the job

Wandsworth SPA processes and manages all new referrals for children and adolescents where there are concerns about emotional/mental health and developmental difficulties. We work closely with other CAMHS teams, GPs, schools, social care and other organisations and charities, to help signpost families to the most appropriate support.

Within Wandsworth Access you will triage referrals and offer mental health assessments for children, adolescents and their families experiencing a range of mental health, neurodevelopmental and emotional health difficulties. You will then direct the referrals to the appropriate CAMHS Team or signpost to alternative routes of support.

Wandsworth T3 CAMHS is a dynamic, supportive and creative multi‑disciplinary treatment team serving young people and families presenting with a variety of complex needs such as low mood, anxiety‑based disorders including OCD, trauma, and difficulties with emotional regulation.

The successful candidate will be responsible for formulating and implementing evidence‑based interventions, drawing on a range of therapeutic models. Care Coordination, risk assessment and management, participation in the duty rota and liaison with professionals from other CAMHS teams and agencies are integral parts of the role and there may also be opportunities to be involved with group facilitation, PPI, co‑supervision of Assistant Psychologists and Clinical Psychology trainees (once supervisor training completed).

Job responsibilities

Access team:

The post holder will:

• Be based in Access CAMHS in Springfield site, assisting with triage, assessment and signposting ensuring Children and Young People reach the most suitable pathway within the locally agreed time frames
• Offer telephone, e‑consultation and face‑to‑face assessment to young people and families who experience mental health/emotional/neurodevelopmental difficulties.
• Take part in triage rota, processing new referrals and making initial brief triage calls to young people and their carers/parents to discuss concerns, assess risk, and develop initial care plans as needed
• Join a multi‑disciplinary team at Wandsworth Access
• Functions of the post will include high‑quality assessments; formulation, and consultation with multi‑agency professionals as needed
• Support integration of assessment where Children and Young People present with Mental Health / Emotional Well‑Being and there are also social contextual issues
• Have an agreed job plan with specified activity and throughput levels;
• Co‑ordinate care for those children, young people and families on their caseload;
• Manage risk within team, Directorate and Trust structures;
• Work to relevant professional and ethical guidelines, and within the framework of Directorate and Trust policies and procedures.
• Use screening and outcome measures in clinically meaningful ways to demonstrate treatment effectiveness and seek feedback about user experience.

Tier 3 team:

• Join a multi‑disciplinary team at Tier 3 Wandsworth
• Carry out high‑quality assessments.
• Provide evidence‑based treatment.
• Have an agreed job plan with specified activity and throughput levels.
• Co‑ordinate care for those children, young people, and families on their caseload.
• Manage risk within team, Directorate and Trust structures
• Work to relevant professional and ethical guidelines, and within the framework of Directorate and Trust policies and procedures.

Person Specification

Training & Qualifications

• Qualified Clinical or Counselling Psychologist registered with the HCPC as an applied psychologist
• Where an applicant is in the final stages of training and has not yet obtained registration, an applicant will only be made an offer conditional upon successful registration within a time‑scale that is specified.
• Post qualification training, such as Training as part of a CYP IAPT collaborative in a recognised evidence based approach
