Job description

Specialist - Chemical Hazard Evaluation - 30921

We are recruiting a regulatory scientist to assess the environmental hazard and risk of industrial and consumer chemicals under the UK REACH and CLP Regulations.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Evaluate the reliability and relevance of ecotoxicity and environmental fate data in chemical dossiers and reports.
  2. Summarize and present endpoints from environmental effects studies, fate data, and model estimates.
  3. Describe test methods, highlighting data limitations and uncertainties.
  4. Use data to determine environmental classifications under CLP and assess compliance with UK REACH standards.
  5. Provide quality assurance reviews and interpret data where necessary.
  6. Contribute to setting priorities and identifying research needs.
  7. Support test guideline development and animal replacement methods.
  8. Work within defined timescales to deliver quality outputs.
  9. Build relationships and collaborate with colleagues and government bodies.

Responding to incidents is integral; you must be available for incident response and business continuity, with training provided.

Team overview: The Chemicals Assessment Unit supports HSE and UK Government on environmental hazards related to chemicals, assessing risks and proposing management actions, working with international partners.

Minimum qualifications and skills:

  • First degree in a relevant scientific discipline (chemistry, biology, environmental science).
  • At least two years of applied experience in environmental effects and/or fate of chemicals, with risk assessment experience at national/international levels.
  • Ability to analyze complex scientific data and communicate findings effectively.
  • Strong writing, organizational, and communication skills.

Applicants should demonstrate relevant experience in environmental hazard and risk assessment, particularly under REACH and CLP regulations, with examples.
