Job Description

Are you interested in working for an organization that values diversity and inclusivity? The Environment Agency is committed to being an inclusive employer and providing equal opportunities for all. We welcome flexible working patterns, including job sharing.

We are seeking a regulatory scientist to assess the environmental hazard and risk of industrial and consumer chemicals under UK REACH and CLP Regulations. Based in our Chemicals Assessment Unit (CAU), you will:

  1. Evaluate the reliability and relevance of ecotoxicity and environmental fate data in chemical dossiers and reports to identify key regulatory endpoints.
  2. Summarize and present endpoints from environmental studies, fate data, and modeled estimates.
  3. Describe study test methods, noting data limitations and uncertainties.
  4. Use data to determine environmental classifications under CLP and assess compliance with UK REACH standards.
  5. Provide quality assurance reviews and interpret data where necessary.
  6. Contribute to setting priorities and identify areas for further research.
  7. Support test guideline development and initiatives for animal replacement methods.
  8. Work within defined timelines to deliver quality outputs.
  9. Build collaborative relationships with colleagues and government bodies.

Responding to incidents is a key aspect of this role. You will be expected to participate in incident response and business continuity activities, with training provided. This may include additional payments.

The Chemicals Assessment Unit is part of the Research division within the Chief Scientist’s Group, operating across multiple locations. We support HSE and UK Government on environmental issues related to chemicals and collaborate with international partners.

Experience and Skills Required:

  • A degree in a relevant scientific discipline such as chemistry, biology, or environmental science.
  • At least two years of practical experience assessing environmental effects or fate of chemicals, at a national or international level.
  • Ability to analyze complex scientific data and follow guidance confidently.
  • Excellent communication, writing, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate relevant experience in environmental hazard and risk assessment, including specific examples related to REACH and CLP regulations.

Additional Information:

Flexible/hybrid working arrangements are supported. Some travel may be required. Please review the Candidate/Additional Information Pack for guidance on answering competency questions.
