The NHS is seeking a full-time B6 Biomedical Scientist to join the Blood Transfusion team in Leeds. The role involves performing complex laboratory procedures, managing patient information, and ensuring high-quality laboratory services. Candidates must hold a relevant degree and be registered with the HCPC. This is a pivotal role in a busy and complex service, contributing to the transfusion needs of multiple hospitals.

TheDepartment of Blood Transfusion is seeking to recruit a full time B6 BMS towork as part of a team covering both of our transfusion laboratories at LGIand SJUH.
Asa Transfusion service we cover the transfusion requirements for fourhospitals and two hospices. We oversee the transfusion of 41,500 units ofblood, plasma, and platelets every year. We are a team of Support Workers,Biomedical Scientists, Hospital Transfusion Team, and Consultants working todeliver a Blood Transfusion service which is one of the most complex andbusiest services in England.
Wehave recently implemented the WinPath Enterprise LIMs and ICE requesting. Weare in the process of refreshing our analysers (2x Erytra at both sites)which will include Grifols Blood Typing Manager software. We use theHaemonetics Blood Track software and for our QMS we use QPulse. We haveseveral exciting developments over the next couple of years including anAcute Laboratory at LGI site with Biochemistry and Haematology, extending theuse of Blood Track to include Tx Training Manager, Tx Bedside and Haemobanks.
Performa wide range of complex technical procedures. These will include the safe andeffective use of highly complex laboratory equipment. Your level of knowledgeand understanding of these procedures will be consistent with that to allowyou to recognise system failures and errors. You will understand the need toreport adverse events in the event of such errors and failures usingappropriate laboratory and Trust policies.
Useof LIMS to enter, manage, retrieve, interpret, validate and authorise complexpatient information and results.
Tobe an integral member of a team providing a clinical technical service and ahigh quality laboratory service.
Towork independently when and as required by the service, for instance whenworking alone in the provision of the emergency on-call service or providingurgent results. The postholder as a specialist scientist within their fieldwill be guided by principles and broad occupational policies/SOPs within theconfines of the Quality Management System.
Towork with precision and follow accurately the documented laboratory standardoperating procedures
Communicationof complex, clinical technical information to users of the service, in amanner that is in accordance with departmental procedures.

Inorder to carry out the job sufficiently and effectively you will havesuccessfully studied for an accredited degree in biomedical sciences, orother equivalent qualification acceptable to the Health Care ProfessionsCouncil (HCPC) and the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS). You will havedeveloped a range of competencies and specialist knowledge in all aspects ofthe discipline through extensive practical experience, in house training andstructured study through the IBMS specialist portfolio programme and willcontinue to develop your skills and knowledge subject to the requirements ofcontinuous professional development (CPD). In addition, basic computer skillsand use of various laboratory and Trust based databases are essential tocarry out your work.
Thepost holder will have undertaken all mandatory training required for theirrole and be willing to attend training to facilitate learning in areas suchas basic HR functions, appraisal, incident investigation etc.
PRINCIPALDUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
Clinical/Scientific /Technical
Toundertake specialist clinical technical investigations for the diagnosis,monitoring and treatment of disease
Underdirection of the team lead co-ordinates effective workflow management withprioritisation of samples received within specialist area.
Developmentand validation of in house quality control material and reagents inconjunction with section leadership.
Toparticipate in equipment testing, validation and adaptation as a function ofservice development.
Tooperate, maintain highly complex laboratory equipment safely and efficiently.Use specialist expertise for complex trouble shooting and resolution oftechnical equipment failure and analytical processes.
Thisjob requires a high degree of dexterity and precision when manipulating smalltools such as pipettes, handling very small volumes of clinical material orwhen preparing microscope slides for examination by others. In order toachieve the required turnaround times the work must be performed with bothspeed and accuracy
Leadershipand Management
Toprovide leadership and contribute to general departmental management, forinstance, by producing rotas, assisting in the ordering, receipt and controlof consumables,

Thepost holder will be expected to gain competence in techniques to enableparticipation in the delivery of 24 hour Pathology service. This entailscontracted participation in a 24/7 rota and / or the out of hour rota.
Thepost holder will be required to work cross site locations (LGI & SJUH) ifthe service requires it.

lNFECTIONCONTROL

SPECIALWORKING CONDITIONS
PhysicalEffort:
Manytasks involve the job holder standing at equipment or sitting at thelaboratory bench for extended periods.
Thisjob may include movement of goods of light and moderate loads up to 15kg.There is the occasional requirement to move loads of 20kg with the aid of atrolley.
Itis anticipated there will be the occasional requirement to exert moderatephysical effort for several short periods in a shift.
MentalEffort:
Theday to day repertoire of this job is diverse and the job holder can expect tobe asked by supervisory staff to change tasks at short notice. In order tominimise errors concentration is required on a daily basis when processingspecimens. Occasionally this may require prolonged concentration and issubject to workload.
Thistask requires concentration so that personal safety is maintained, andequipment is not damaged.
EmotionalEffort:
Innormal circumstances there is little patient contact by the job holder andexposure to emotional circumstances is limited.
WorkingConditions:
Thepost holder will work generally in a laboratory environment and may berequired to sit or stand. We would encourage you to attend one of our twosites for an informal look round but understand that is not alwayspracticable. We will offer MS Teams meetings should you wish to have aninformal discussion.
