Job description

Job Overview

The RUH Bath NHS Foundation Trust provides acute treatment and care for a catchment population of around 500,000 people in Bath, and the surrounding towns and villages in North East Somerset and Western Wiltshire.

The Biochemistry department processes a high workload (around 4000 requests per day) and the laboratory is UKAS accredited. We operate a 24/7 service and staff are expected to support the out of hours service under Agenda for Change terms and conditions. There are a minimum of 2 BMS staff working in Biochemistry on every shift. The Biochemistry Department has a Beckman based Automation section (1xAU5812, 1xAU5822, 2xDXI800s and a full DxA track), Sebia electrophoresis equipment. The IT systems used at the RUH are Cirdan Ultra LIMS, Sunquest ICE, Cerner Millennium and QPulse. We are looking for someone who is keen to join the friendly and professional laboratory team as a band 6 BMS.

The successful candidate will be expected to have technical knowledge commensurate with this grade but also be able to maintain and progress quality initiatives with a flexible and innovative approach. Main duties of the job

  • Performance of specialist scientific and technical duties, as required, to the standard expected of a State Registered BMS.
  • To use and maintain the integrity of the laboratory computer systems and their databases for data entry of requests, recording and reporting all results, compiling reports and other documents, and for communication (email).
  • Ensure that all analyses are performed to the highest standard using approved methods and Quality Control systems
  • Use specialist knowledge to perform analytical techniques in each section of the department, recording and interpreting complex array of Quality Control data according to departmental policy; to use specialist knowledge to interpret this array of data in order to identify changes in system performance and take corrective action when appropriate.
  • To combine specialist knowledge and the quality control data to decide when abnormal results need to be reviewed and to authorise and release results and to report by telephone when required by designated action limits.
  • With section BMS2, organise and plan daily workload to provide the most efficient and effective service and to fit in with the needs of the department.
  • Ensure confidentiality in relation to matters arising with patients and their treatment is strictly observed.
  • Ensures compliance with the code of practice of the Department regarding Health and Safety especially with regard to handling and disposal of high risk material.
