Job summary

This specialist grade Biomedical Scientist (BMS) postinvolves the processing of biomedical specimens, their analysis and recordingof results. The post holder will be an active member of a laboratory teamundertaking rotation as required. The post holder will be required to applytheir generic skills in a range of laboratory settings.

Although we seek a Specialist Biomedical Scientist to fillthis role, considerations will be made for a HCPC registered BMS with suitableHistology experience and is willing to working towards completing the IBMSSpecialist portfolio.

Main duties of the job

Thepost holder will perform laboratory investigations within a histopathologylaboratory, troubleshoot complex laboratory equipment, and engage in a range ofscientific and technical duties requiring hand eye co-ordination and fineadjustment of equipment. The post holder will also be expected co-ordinate ownwork and that of MLAs and students, provide practical training to individualor small groups of staff, seek to maintain the integrity of records entered onthe laboratory database including data entered by others. The post holder willgenerate test results which contribute directly to serious and life threateningdiseases and will be required to report these to clinicians and ward staff. Participatein the departments specimen reception, including the receipt, storage &disposal of human tissue in accordance with HTA standards. Assist band 6/7staff in specimen dissection. Handling & processing of surgical andpost-mortem tissues to routine microscopy, including specialised paraffin techniques,hand processing of minute specimens. Participation in specialised sections:immunocytochemistry, immunofluorescence, special stains and cryotomy (frozensections).

We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes.
