Job description
Overview

Specialist Biomedical Science (BMS) staff carry out analyses on blood, body fluids, tissues, and cells to determine the presence or absence of disease, enabling diagnosis, prognosis, and monitoring of treatment effectiveness. They also carry out population screening for inherited or malignant disorders. Specialist BMS work as autonomous practitioners to provide a pathology service outside routine hours and may rotate throughout the department, gaining depth of knowledge in specific areas.

The post holder is required to participate in a 24-hour shift pattern. Cross-training in other traditional disciplines may be required and staff may be expected to work at any site where Pathology is provided by Mersey and West Lancashire NHS Trust. The JD & PS are currently under AfC review and are subject to change.

Responsibilities
  • Carry out the full analytical repertoire of tests across the department and provide high standards of patient care in a clinical pathology service.
  • Work autonomously with limited supervision to deliver pathology services for the Trust outside routine hours.
  • Participate in cross-training and be prepared to work at any site where Pathology is provided by the Trust.
  • Rotate through the department to develop depth of knowledge in specific areas.
  • Adhere to all relevant regulatory, safety, and quality standards in the delivery of pathology services.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check as required; submission may be necessary under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975.
  • Applicants may be required to pay for their DBS check; costs may be deducted from salary following appointment.
  • Enrolment in the DBS Update Service is encouraged where applicable (annual fee applies).
  • Applicants should create a UKVI account and may need to obtain an eVisa; guidance is provided prior to travelling.
  • Flexible working is supported; all employees may request flexible working from day one, with consideration given to each request.
