Specialist Biomedical Scientist

Blood Sciences Department at Birmingham Children's Hospital is looking to recruit a Band 5/6 Biomedical Scientist within haematology department. Appointment to Band 6 will require the post holder to have completed a Specialist IBMS Portfolio (band 5 would be considered with the view to progressing on completion of portfolio). We will consider applications from candidates HCPC registered only who have relevant Haematology lab experience and post registration experience in a UK Haematology department is essential.

Our department operates 24 hours, 7 day service performing a wide range of paediatric investigations, in addition to supporting regional services in paediatric medicine / surgery. This includes a busy Emergency Department, large paediatric Intensive Care Unit, Cardiac and Liver surgery and a Bone Marrow Transplant centre. The work is interesting and varied and the department encourages and supports career development.

The successful candidate will have previous experience of working in Haematology and be expected to maintain the required professional standards and up to date knowledge of Haematology and Transfusion Sciences and current working practices. They will be required to rotate through the Diagnostic Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Specialist Haemostasis sections working as part of the team to contribute to the provision and further development of high quality diagnostic service.

Participation in the 24/7 out of hours service provision is required.

Main duties of the job

To rotate across Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Specialist Coagulation to include Flow Cytometry sections. To support the full 24/7 out of hours service provision.

Person Specification
Qualifications and knowledge
  • Registration with Health Care Professions Council (HCPC)
  • Knowledge and practical skills in Blood Transfusion/Haematology and Coagulation
  • MSc Biomedical science or equivalent
Requirements
  • Appointment to band 6 will require Haematology experience in a UK laboratory
  • Appointment to band 6 will require the post holder to have an IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Haematology and Blood Transfusion
  • Basic understanding of haematology, coagulation and blood group serology
  • Current band 5 with Haematology and Blood Transfusion experience in a UK laboratory
Nature of experience
  • Knowledge of Quality Assurance and audit practices, Laboratory Accreditation, HCPC and IBMS professional standards and Laboratory Health and Safety standards
  • Basic understanding of Microsoft Windows and experience of use of a LIMS
  • High levels of analytical skills required to process and interpret both simple and complex data to enable authorisation of accurate diagnostic tests,
  • To help plan and coordinate validation/verification projects
