Job description

Specialised Respiratory Physiotherapist - Surrey Downs H&C

To provide effective, efficient, and high-quality physiotherapy treatment programmes for respiratory patients in the community setting and within the pulmonary rehabilitation service.

Responsibilities include leading assessments, group education sessions, and exercise classes, adjusting exercises according to patients' health status. Ability to undertake oxygen therapy assessments and prescriptions (Long term oxygen therapy and ambulatory oxygen) is essential.

You will act as a source of expertise on respiratory patient management, providing support and advice to other health professionals and agencies within and outside the Trust. Effective communication with patients to empower informed decision-making and engagement in treatment planning is crucial, considering cultural, linguistic, medical, emotional, psychological, and physical factors.

You will communicate complex patient information to ensure collaborative working within the multidisciplinary team and liaise with referring agencies to facilitate timely service provision.

Accountability for all aspects of your work, maintaining high standards of clinical care, is expected. You will organise your clinical caseload efficiently, prioritising tasks as necessary, and contribute to service development, patient pathways, and evidence-based practice projects.

Involvement in clinical innovation, research, and departmental audits is encouraged. You will manage a varied caseload, maintain accurate documentation, and communicate assessment and treatment results appropriately.

Managing clinical risk within your caseload and supporting staff and rehabilitation assistants is essential. You will assist in training, supervising, and developing junior staff.

Communication

Effective communication of complex and sensitive information with patients, carers, GPs, consultants, and other agencies is vital. Skills in persuasion, motivation, explanation, and informed consent are necessary, with consideration for potential barriers like hearing loss, dysphasia, pain, or fear. You will ensure patient confidentiality and data protection compliance.

Responsibility for equipment use, adherence to departmental policies, and ensuring safety through training and supervision are required. You will integrate clinical governance and risk management into your practice, report accidents or near misses promptly, and oversee the daily management and supervision of your team, including performance management and staff recruitment.

Participation in departmental meetings and peer group activities is expected to support continuous improvement and team cohesion.
