Special School Learning Disability Staff Nurse

An opportunity has arisen for a Learning Disability Nurse to join the Special School Nursing team in Dudley

The role is to support Band 6 nurses in the Dudley Special schools and the Community Children's nursing team. The team works as part of the Children's Community Nursing Team (ICCN Team) The nurse will support in managing the health needs of children and young people with complex health and profound learning disabilities. Some home visits and other community visits will be carried out as part of a holistic case management.

The nurse will be responsible for providing clinical skills in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the health needs of the children. The role will include teaching/training and supporting the team as well as the school staff to ensure the health needs of the children are met, this may involve complex epilepsy management, enteral feeding and tracheostomy care.

The nurse will require the experience and ability to be able to manage emergency health situations.

The candidate must be a registered learning disability nurse with recent experience of working with children with learning disabilities and complex health needs. Previous experience of special school nursing would be desirable.

Main duties of the job
  • Access, plan and implement care for children and young people up to the age of 19 years , with a diagnosed severe or complex learning disability
  • Implement interventions to promote the health and wellbeing of children, young people and families affected by learning disabilities
  • Access and develop strategies to support children/families with specific issues i.e sleep strategies, behavioural strategies, continence issues, medication and epilepsy support
  • To provide skills and strategies for young people/parents and carers to effectively manage their own/their child's condition
