An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 2, Special Feeds Unit Milk Technician, to work under strict instruction from our Paediatric Dietitians for our children in Rose ward, PHDU (Paediatric High Dependency) and PICU (Paediatric Intensive Care Unit).

We are looking for a dynamic individual who has the enthusiasm for working within a team to support the wider inpatient area. Candidates must have a reliable work record and the desire to learn and further develop their skills. You will need to be self-motivated, have good IT skills, pay great attention to detail, and have the ability to work under pressure providing high standards of care.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring the very highest standard of care for every child.
  • Preparing feeds for babies and children who have special nutritional needs.
  • Developing professional relationships with Rose ward, PHDU, and PICU and other departments that are involved in the care of the child patient.
  • Communicating at a high level in the multi-disciplinary team, especially dietetics.
  • Holding a keen interest in catering.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Working in the SFU under the supervision and instruction of the SFU manager and Dietitians.
  • Following detailed policies and procedures for the preparation of special feeds.
  • Undertaking a training schedule to achieve competence in all areas of the diet service following the written instructions of the dietitian.
  • Making special formulas to a high degree of accuracy, according to dietitian prescription.
  • Being responsible for the safe use of equipment in the SFU.
  • Daily temperature record of the fridges, the freezers, and the Blast chiller.
  • Being actively responsible for the stock feeds and equipment in the SFU and Level 4 Milk Kitchen.
  • Helping with incoming deliveries of orders and ensuring correct storage, stock control, and rotation.
  • Following relevant policies and procedures to ensure safe preparation of 24-hour batches of specialist powder formulas and feeds.
  • Providing information to ward staff regarding queries about SFU procedures.
  • Liaising with other hospital departments to ensure the smooth running of the SFU.
  • Holding a polite and helpful manner when dealing with members of the public and hospital staff who use our services.
  • Assisting with daily cleaning duties.
  • Reporting any hazards in respect of the Health and Safety at Work policy to your manager or ward sister.
  • Demonstrating any aspect of duties and responsibilities to new staff and being involved in training new staff, as directed by the SFU Manager.
  • Performing any other reasonable duties as requested by the SFU Manager.
  • Undertaking an annual appraisal and completing an annual Personal Development Plan.
