Job summary

Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust is seeking a Sonographer to independently perform ultrasound examinations across obstetric, gynecological and abdominal areas, with a focus on high-quality images and accurate reporting.

You will support a teaching department, travel to community sites, and contribute to patient care in a busy, patient-centered environment at Queen Alexandra Hospital and surrounding locations.

Qualifications

  • PgD/MSc in Medical Ultrasound or Diploma in Medical Ultrasound (Obstetrics, Gynaecology +/- general ultrasound).
  • Current HCPC or NMC registration required.
  • Willingness to travel to Fareham, Gosport and Petersfield community sites.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a wide range of ultrasound examinations in line with guidelines.
  • Provide daily obs/Gynae and abdominal ultrasound services.
  • Interpret images and provide independent written reports.

Job Description

NHS Band 7 Salary: £49,387 - £56,515 per annum

Hours per Week: full time 37.5

Contract Type: Permanent

Key Responsibilities
  • Independently undertake a wide range of ultrasound examinations in line with Local, Regional and National guidelines as an autonomous practitioner. Undertaking ultrasound scans at remote satellite ultrasound facilities where there is no immediately available Consultant Radiologist support
  • Provide a daily obs/Gynae +/- abdominal ultrasound service to all departments at Queen Alexandra Hospital, working within own qualification & expertise.
  • Have a detailed knowledge of ultrasound equipment and the physics of ultrasound and be able to operate a wide range of ultrasound machines. To use this skill and knowledge to operate machines safely to produce optimum images and most accurate diagnosis
  • Participation in evaluation of new equipment
  • To use own judgment to analyse and interpret ultrasound images in order to provide independent written reports
  • To give a diagnosis to the referring clinician which may directly impact on patient treatment and management; often resulting in surgical intervention
  • Provide specialist advice concerning the care and/or treatment of obstetric, gynaecological and abdominal patients

Qualifications
Essential
  • PgD/MSc in Medical Ultrasound or Diploma in Medical Ultrasound (Obstetrics, Gynaecology +/- general ultrasound)
  • Hold a current state registration certificate (HCPC, NMC)
  • Have portfolio evidence.
  • Ability to travel to and work in our community sites located in Fareham, Gosport and Petersfield.
  • Sonographer Experience in a NHS setting.
  • Nuchal Translucency accredited (Fetal Medicine Foundation & DQASS)
Desirable
  • MSK
  • Small parts (Testes/Thyroid etc.)
  • Paediatrics
Experience
Essential
  • Experience as a sonographer in an NHS Trust.
Desirable
  • Post graduate radiography/midwifery experience.
Skills And Knowledge
  • Highly developed physical skills (dexterity, co-ordination & sensory skills)
  • Sound technical knowledge of equipment and ultrasound techniques
  • Sound clinical knowledge
  • Ability to communicate effectively up to consultant level
  • Competent in all aspects of obstetric, gynae, abdominal and trans-vaginal scanning
  • Good communication and patient care skills
  • Ability to work alone or as part of team
  • Enthusiastic and self-motivated
  • Good organisational skills
  • Keen to develop and take on new roles
  • A willingness to be flexible
  • Ability to juggle many priorities at one time, whilst remaining calm
