Solicitor NQ - 4 years PQE – Large loss, HSE Regulatory and Crime
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join Keoghs Scottish large loss, HSE regulatory and crime team as an assistant. The role is a chance to be involved in interesting and varied (EL/PL/RTA) large loss, and HSE regulatory and crime cases.
The successful candidate will assist Partner, Laurie Traynor with her complex, high value, and at times high-profile caseload as well as running their own files. It will include assisting on fatal and catastrophic cases where we are often involved from the outset through to conclusion.

The role would suit someone of up to 4 years PQE. Defender litigation, crime and advocacy experience is preferred. However, we can be flexible in terms of experience for the right candidate.
Key Responsibilities
- Working with the Partner on complex and high value claims
- Drafting pleadings and court documents
- Obtaining and drafting witness statements
- Forensic review and analysis of relevant documents assessing liability, quantum and causation in civil claims
- Drafting technical advice on all aspects of claims for sophisticated insurer clients and keeping them updated
- Preparation and lodging of Productions
- Organising, attending and drafting notes of consultations with counsel, clients and experts and executing follow up actions
- Liaising with experts - instructing own experts, summarising expert evidence, lodging reports
- Maintaining case managements systems with up-to-date management information for clients
- Adhering to court deadlines and managing files in accordance with client SLAs
- Delivery of agreed performance targets and quality standards
- Attending site visits, meeting clients, drafting statements and taking photographs
- Civil, criminal and FAI advocacy
- Instruction and attendance at court with counsel and drafting notes
- Review of medical records, post-mortem reports and CCTV footage
- Review and analysis of criminal prosecution evidence, explaining implications and prospects of defence to lay client/company
- Liaising with Court, COPFS, Police/HSE/EHO or relevant regulator
- Attendance and representation at Police/HSE/EHO interviews
- Development and training of more junior team members.
- Managing your own case load
- Developing Keoghs’ client relationships to attract work on an instruction-by-instruction basis.
- Assisting in business development initiatives, including drafting of articles, blog pieces, e-shots and presentations and attendance at relevant events.
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
- A qualified Solicitor
- Excellent attention to detail is essential
- Organisational skills are key
- Experience of large loss (EL/PL/RTA), HSE regulatory and crime and fatal accident inquiries is preferable. However, we can be flexible in terms of experience for the right candidate.
- The personal skills to deal with clients in a sensitive manner given the context
- Excellent telephone and communication skills with people at all levels inside and outside the business
- Calm under pressure
- Self-confidence, with good literacy and IT skills
- Good team worker with the flexibility to do what is required to get good client results and ensure their service levels are met
- Previous experience of time recording and case management system use is preferable.
Working hours
- 35 hours per week
- Monday – Friday 9am – 5.00pm with 1 unpaid hour for lunch
- We are open to part time or flexible working applications
- One day a week in the Glasgow office
