Job Opportunity: Sole Gardener / Housekeeper Couple

An incredible opportunity has arisen for a Sole Gardener or a Sole Gardener and Part-time Housekeeper Couple to join a beautiful property south of Godalming, Surrey. The Sole Gardener will be responsible for the overall management and maintenance of the gardens and grounds, while the housekeeper will work on a self-employed, part-time basis – 16 hours per week, ideally over 3 or 4 days.

The property spans 57 acres, including parkland, grasslands, and open fields, with a meticulously designed 5-acre garden. The garden has recently been transformed to become lower maintenance. It features a charming walled garden, a 120-foot-long peach house with fruit trees and vegetables, a small kitchen garden, hedges, trees, and lawns. Some lawns are cut regularly in summer, while others are left to attract wildlife.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for horticulture, good plant knowledge, an eye for detail, and a strong interest in high standards. They should be hands-on, organized, able to work independently, and flexible. Gardening tasks include lawn maintenance, hedge cutting, pruning, transplanting, weeding, fruit and vegetable growing, and propagation. Experience with garden machinery is required; spray certificates and chainsaw tickets are advantageous but not essential, as training can be provided.

Additional duties include gutter clearing in winter, leaf clearing in autumn, property security during owner travel, and caring for two small dogs (Jack Russell and Shitzu cross). There are two other properties on the estate requiring occasional maintenance, and occasional driving to and from the airport may be requested.

Housekeeping duties involve cleaning, laundry, ironing, and weekly shopping for the main house.

Accommodation is a rent-free, one-bedroom self-contained flat on the estate. The employer pays council tax and utilities. A car is available for work and personal use.

The salary for the Sole Gardener role is £35,000 per annum, and the housekeeper is paid £15/hour. References will be requested at the offer stage. A driving license is required due to the rural location.

SALARY: Up to £47,500 total
