Job summary

SoCode Recruitment is partnering with a technology consultancy just south of Cambridge to recruit a Project Manager for the software delivery team. The role combines software with embedded and electronics workstreams, coordinating across disciplines for complex client programmes.

You will be involved early in shaping opportunities alongside sales and engineering, maintain regular client contact, and travel to customer sites as needed.

Responsibilities

• Lead planning and delivery for software projects, often with hardware or embedded workstreams.

• Bring structure to delivery using agile methods, WBS and MS Project as needed.
• Maintain reporting and governance from kick-off through handover.
• Provide feedback to improve how software projects are run and tighten the approach over time.

Job description

Socode are working with a technology consultancy, a short drive south of Cambridge, that builds complex electronic, RF and software systems for clients across a broad mix of industries. They're looking to add a Project Manager to their software delivery team.

What makes this one interesting is how early you get involved. Rather than picking projects up once they've been sold, you'll be alongside the sales and engineering teams while opportunities are still being shaped, then carry them through to delivery. The work is software-led, but rarely software-only as most programmes run in parallel with embedded or electronics workstreams, so you'll be coordinating across disciplines throughout. Expect regular client contact, three days a week in the office, and occasional trips to customer sites at home and abroad.

What will you be doing?

• Taking the lead on planning and delivery for software projects, usually with hardware or embedded elements running alongside
• Working with a technical lead to keep schedules, budgets, resourcing and change under control
• Being the client's main point of contact and keeping communication clear on both sides
• Getting the best out of your project teams through hands-on leadership and early intervention when things wobble
• Bringing structure to delivery using agile methods, WBS and MS Project as the situation demands
• Maintaining sensible reporting and governance from kick-off through to handover
• Feeding back into how the business runs software projects and helping tighten up the approach over time

What are they looking for?

• A track record of delivering complex software development projects
• Security Clearance or the eligibility to obtain SC
• Enough technical depth to engage properly with engineers - version control, CI/CD and test frameworks should be familiar territory
• Genuine people skills, with the judgement to read a team and keep it performing
• A clear communicator, equally comfortable in a stand-up or a boardroom
• Working knowledge of tools such as Jira, Confluence, Git and Microsoft Project
• Someone who thrives in a consultancy setting where priorities move and no two projects look the same
• Degree-level technical qualification in a relevant engineering subject, or equivalent experience
