Lead the Future of Cloud-Based Data Engineering

We're partnering with a highly successful technology business looking for an experienced Software Development Team Lead to lead a specialist engineering team responsible for delivering business-critical data solutions within a highly regulated, high-volume environment.

This is a fantastic opportunity to combine hands-on technical leadership with people management, helping drive the migration from traditional SQL-based platforms to a modern Google Cloud Platform (GCP) architecture while embracing AI-enabled engineering practices.

If you're an experienced technical leader who enjoys mentoring engineers, remaining close to the technology, and driving continuous improvement, this could be the ideal next step.

The Opportunity

You'll lead a small, highly skilled software engineering team, taking ownership of delivery while remaining technically involved in solution design, coaching and technical decision-making.

Working closely with architecture, compliance, data and business stakeholders, you'll help shape the evolution of a modern cloud-based data platform, ensuring solutions are scalable, performant and delivered to exceptionally high quality standards.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys balancing technical leadership with people development and wants to help build a collaborative, high-performing engineering culture.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Lead, mentor and develop a team of Software Engineers through regular coaching, 1-1s and career development.
  • Act as a technical role model, remaining hands-on where required to support the team.
  • Drive delivery across multiple concurrent workstreams within a fast-paced Agile environment.
  • Support the migration of existing SQL-based solutions into Google Cloud Platform.
  • Champion engineering best practice, code quality, testing and continuous improvement.
  • Work closely with architects and stakeholders to translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions.
  • Identify delivery risks, dependencies and technical challenges early, ensuring successful outcomes.
  • Introduce and promote AI-enabled engineering tools and ways of working to improve productivity and software quality.
  • Foster a collaborative, supportive and high-performing team culture.
  • Proven experience leading software engineering teams, ideally managing between 2-5 engineers.
  • Strong experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP), particularly cloud-native data solutions.
  • Hands-on commercial experience with BigQuery and GoogleSQL.
  • Strong SQL development and database optimisation skills.
  • Previous experience migrating or modernising data platforms from SQL-based technologies to cloud architectures.
  • Experience conducting 1-1s, coaching, mentoring and developing engineers.
  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
  • Comfortable remaining technically involved while leading delivery.
Highly Desirable
  • Experience introducing AI tooling into software engineering workflows (e.g. GitHub Copilot, Gemini, Claude or similar).
  • Experience leading geographically distributed or hybrid engineering teams.
  • Cloud architecture and modern software design experience.
  • Experience working within highly regulated environments.
  • Knowledge of high-volume data processing and reporting platforms.
  • Experience with REST or SOAP integrations.
  • Background in financial services, regulatory technology, gaming, betting or other compliance-driven industries.
About You

You'll be an enthusiastic and approachable technical leader who enjoys helping others succeed.

You're equally comfortable discussing architecture with senior engineers, coaching developers through technical challenges, and communicating delivery updates to senior stakeholders.

You lead by example, remain calm under pressure and enjoy solving complex technical problems while creating an environment where engineers can thrive.

You'll bring:

  • A collaborative leadership style.
  • A growth mindset and passion for continuous improvement.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to prioritise effectively.
  • A positive attitude towards change and new technologies.
  • Genuine enthusiasm for coaching and developing technical talent.
Why Apply?

This is an opportunity to join a business investing heavily in modern cloud technologies, AI-enabled software development and engineering excellence.

You'll have the chance to influence technical direction, develop engineers, work with modern cloud platforms and play a key role in a major technology transformation.

If you're looking for a leadership role where you can remain technically credible while helping build high-performing engineering teams, we'd love to hear from you.
