Typical Activities This is a technical leadership role where approximately 70% of your time is spent hands-on developing software, with the remaining 30% focused on online management and developing a high-performing engineering team. Working closely with the Head of Software, you'll remain active software engineers while providing leadership, coaching and technical direction across the engineering function. This role is ideal for experienced software engineers who enjoy mentoring others but still want to spend the majority of their time designing, developing and reviewing high-quality software.
Software Engineering (Approximately 70%)
- Design, develop andmaintain production-qualitysoftware as anactive member ofengineering teams
- Write, review andoptimise high-qualitycode, primarily inreal-time C
- Produce and reviewsoftware architecture,design documentation andtechnical proposals
- Participate in codereviews, design reviewsand engineering governanceactivities
- Support engineers throughtechnical mentoring, pairingand collaborative problemsolving
- Own the quality, maintainability and deliveryof software solutions
- Apply modern softwareengineering practices includingCI/CD, automatedtesting and securedevelopment
- Contribute to planning, estimation and technicaldecision making acrossmultiple projects
- Drive consistency inengineering standards,tooling and developmentpractices
Line Management (Approximately30%)
- Line manage ateam of approximatelyeight software engineers
- Conduct regular one-to-one meetings, objective setting andperformance reviews
- Support career developmentthrough coaching, mentoringand development planning
- Identify training needsand help growcapability across theengineering function
- Support recruitment, onboardingand succession planning
- Work alongside theHead of Softwareto develop technicalcapability aligned tofuture business needs
- Encourage knowledge sharingand collaboration acrossengineering teams
- Contribute to continuousimprovement of engineeringprocesses, standards andbest practice
