Job Description
As the Engineering Manager for the Insights Tooling team within BBC's Data Platform, you will lead up to 50 engineers, including Software Engineering Team Leads and Principal Engineers, to transform siloed analytics solutions into a unified, API-driven platform on AWS. Your work will empower teams across the
BBC-from journalists to executives-to make data-informed decisions by delivering scalable, user-friendly data products.
You will collaborate with Engineering, Architecture, Product, and UX leaders to drive technical excellence while fostering a culture of innovation, inclusivity, and best practices in data engineering.
Main Responsibilities
Platform Leadership: Architect and deliver scalable, API-first analytics solutions, enabling seamless data access across the BBC.
· Full-Stack Ownership: Oversee development of:
o Frontend applications (React, TypeScript, Node.js) for intuitive data visualization.
o Backend systems for large-scale data ingestion, processing (AWS), storage, and management (e.g., NoSQL like MongoDB).
· Engineering Excellence: Champion DevOps, observability, and CI/CD practices to ensure reliability, performance, and data quality.
· Team Growth: Recruit, mentor, and develop engineering talent, fostering leadership within your teams.
· Stakeholder Collaboration: Partner with Product, UX, and Delivery teams to align technical solutions with business goals.
· Inclusive Culture: Cultivate a diverse, psychologically safe environment where teams thrive.

You are a data-savvy engineering leader with a proven record of building high-impact platforms and teams. You bring:
Technical Expertise
· Proven experience designing large-scale data platforms (AWS, APIs, cloud- architectures).
· Strong grasp of modern data engineering (ETL, warehousing, real-time processing) and full-stack development (React, Node.js).
· Operational rigor in DevOps/SRE practices (monitoring, scalability, incident management).
Leadership & Collaboration
· Success leading 50+ engineers, including managers and principals, in agile environments.
· Ability to translate business needs into technical strategy, balancing innovation with pragmatism.
· Passion for mentoring teams and advocating for inclusive, user-centric engineering practices.
Stakeholder Impact
· Experience driving cross-functional alignment in complex organizations.
· Focus on audience-first outcomes, using experimentation and data to guide decisions.
