Job Description

Software Engineer – Real-Time APIs & AI Planning Systems

Location: Manchester or Huddersfield (Hybrid Remote)

Package: £40,000-£60,000 D.O.E + Share Scheme

A pioneering tech start-up working at the intersection of AI, transport, and geospatial data is seeking a Software Engineer with a strong foundation in real-time APIs and a passion for intelligent systems.

This is a rare opportunity to collaborate with one of the UK’s foremost academic experts in AI planning and scheduling, contributing to a transformative software platform being used to reimagine how transport systems are managed across the North of England.

If you're keen to work with cutting-edge AI, are comfortable navigating live data feeds, and want to help build smarter, more sustainable cities, then read on.

Your Role Will Involve:

  • Developing real-time API integrations for ingesting and processing traffic signal feeds and other live transport data
  • Supporting the evolution of a sophisticated AI planning engine built using PDDL+ and Prolog
  • Working closely with a leading professor in AI planning to modularise and scale the current architecture
  • Interfacing with public sector authorities and vehicle OEMs to ensure data integrity, usability, and responsiveness
  • Contributing to a highly collaborative and mission-led tech team, blending cutting-edge research with real-world impact

We’re Looking For:

  • Strong experience designing and building real-time API systems – particularly involving transport or mobility data
  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn PDDL+ and Prolog
  • Familiarity with AI planning/scheduling systems or an academic interest in intelligent systems
  • Background in Python and web development (e.g. Django/Flask, Node JS, React JS)
  • Confident working with data from geospatial or traffic systems
  • A 2:1 or above from university, plus 2+ years of professional software experience
  • Excellent communication skills, especially when collaborating with technical and public sector partners
  • An inclusive mindset – the team is actively seeking to improve and welcomes applicants from underrepresented backgrounds

Why Join?

This is more than a job – it’s a chance to shape the future of urban mobility using advanced AI techniques. You’ll be joining an agile, close-knit company with a supportive culture and strong growth trajectory. There’s also a share scheme in place, meaning you’ll directly benefit from the company’s success.
