Join the Digital Transformation at Anglian Water!
We’re on an exciting journey in Digital Engineering, redefining our role from a traditional support function to a trusted, strategic partner. Our Digital Engineering practice works side by side with subject matter experts across the business to co-create user-centred, data-driven systems—like our Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)—that boost performance and productivity. Using modern tech and agile thinking, we design, build, and evolve digital solutions that stay ahead of business needs and tech trends.
We don’t just deliver—we continuously improve, ensuring our digital solutions remain powerful, purposeful, and perfectly aligned with the future.
As a Software Engineer, you’ll be a vital member of one of our agile Digital Squads—small, cross-functional teams aligned to specific areas of the business. In this role, you’ll be instrumental in the evolution of our LIMS, a key system that supports water quality analysis, sample tracking, and regulatory compliance across our laboratory operations.
Our squads follow Agile Scrum and DevOps principles and work closely with Product Owners, Scrum Masters, UX/UI Designers, User Researchers, and other engineers. Collaboration is key, and you'll also partner with key teams like Architecture, Security, and Service Operations to ensure what we build is secure, reliable, and aligned with organisational standards. Our goal? To deliver a robust, user-led LIMS that supports lab efficiency and data accuracy at scale.
What You’ll Be Doing
As a hands-on, agile Software Engineer, you'll be responsible for delivering, maintaining, and evolving our Laboratory Information Management System. This includes everything from design and estimation to coding, cloud infrastructure management, and supporting the LIMS in production.
While you’ll typically work within your squad, there will be opportunities to lead on specific technical components of the LIMS and to enhance your personal skills and domain knowledge.
Day to day, you’ll:
Manage your own workload using Kanban boards, staying focused and self-motivated
Collaborate closely with your team to align on goals and priorities
Contribute to retrospectives and help improve how we work, from tools to processes
Advise and support Product Owners, translating laboratory and data requirements into scalable, efficient system features
Own the detailed system design, ensuring best practices and engineering standards are met
Key Accountabilities
Systems Analysis, Design & Estimation
Work with Product Owners, Architecture, Security, and Analysts to understand LIMS-specific user needs
Create high-level designs, estimate development work, and define non-functional requirements (e.g. system uptime, sample tracking reliability, secure data handling)
Act as a technical consultant on testing strategies and contribute to DevOps practices
Software Development & Support
Design, build, and maintain LIMS modules and supporting cloud infrastructure
Implement deployment strategies (CI/CD), maintain documentation, and support disaster recovery planning
Lead on testing activities (TDD, BDD, automation), conduct code reviews, and provide third-line support for LIMS-related issues
Agile Ways of Working
Actively contribute to Agile ceremonies
Help refine the backlog and reduce technical debt within the LIMS codebase
Promote a transparent, user-focused culture aligned with Scrum values and Anglian Water’s mission

Advocate of Agile and continuous improvement
Strong communicator able to explain technical issues to both technical and non-technical audiences
